What can cause synapse to not function correctly?

An abnormally thin dendritic spine can yield poor neural impulse conduction; and drugs like LSD which mimic neurotransmitters may "clog" receptors & cause continued activation, I think. I suspect there could also be problems with the PRODUCTION of neurotransmitters or with the conveyance of vesicles containing NT to the synapse.

Synapses are spaces or junctions between two neurons. The principle of synapse works on mechanism of neuro-transmitters and neuro-inhibitors.

When a nerve impulse reaches the end of one neuron to travel to the next one, at that moment acetylcholine is produced in the synapse. Acetyl choline being a neurotransmitter helps to transmit the nerve impulse.

Right after the nerve impulse has passed through the synapse, a neuroinhibitor such as cholinesterase si produced to stop the action of acetylcholine.

At a particular synapse, these two chemicals are produced at a very high rate. This is how a nerve impulse works. But suppose if the production of these two chemicals is affected, the synapse will not function properly.

What stage of sleep does sleep talking occur?

The small minority of people who do sometimes talk when asleep appear to do so during the NREM or non rapid eye movement phases of their night's total sleep, and do not appear to remember dreaming in connection with what they said.

What happens if you wake up with no pants on and your door is locked?

During the REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep. the breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow, eyes jerk rapidly and limb muscles are temporarily paralyzed. Brain waves during this stage increase to levels experienced when a person is awake. Also, heart rate increases, blood pressure rises. This is the time when most dreams occur, and, if awoken during REM sleep, a person can remember the dreams. During REM the body goes paralyzed though i do believe in cases such as sleep terrors the body does not paralyze allowing the person full movement with no control over their own actions. due to the fact they are asleep.

Maybe you had a dirty dream and took your pants off yourself without knowing it.......or aliens are probing you.

Which benzodiazepine increases REM sleep?

none. Benzodiazepines decrease slow wave (stage 3 and 4) sleep and only mildly suppress REM sleep. however, no benzodiazepines increase REM sleep.

A piece of non-medical, anecdotal evidence to the contrary: I use the Zeo sleep clock to track my REM, deep and light sleep in minutes every night as I have pretty bad insomnia. After days of very little REM (under an hour) I took one xanax .25mg at bedtime, then another at 3:00a.m.-same dosage- and got 1 hour, 56 minutes of REM sleep. I haven't repeated b/c I don't want to become dependent, and it could have just alleviated anxiety and allowed me to catch up on a REM deficit. But it certainly didn't seem to suppress REM either.

Why do you have sleep paralysis?

Sleep paralysis is a disorder characterized by the inability to move upon falling asleep or waking up. Sleep paralysis occurs as a person is moving in our out of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and is the result of a premature disconnection between the brain and body. While the brain and body normally disconnect during REM sleep, those who suffer from sleep paralysis experience the disconnection as they are about to enter or exit REM instead.

Symptoms of Sleep ParalysisSymptoms of sleep paralysis include:
  • Sensations of noise or smells
  • Feelings of levitation
  • Inability to move the body
  • Feelings of terror
  • Images of intruders
Causes of Sleep ParalysisSleep paralysis can be caused by any incident that disrupts normal REM patterns, including jet lack, insomnia, inconsistent sleep hygiene, and brain injury. Treatment of Sleep ParalysisThe best way to banish sleep paralysis is to reestablish normal REM patterns. Going to bed and rising at the same time every day will reintroduce a normal brain-body connection. TreatmentThis is very spiritual phenomenon, and it can be resolved instantly, even though most people are trying to put it in the medical realm. Go to StopSleepParalysis.org for some easy steps to fix it on your own, without wasting your money.

Is it better to get one hour of sleep or no sleep?

The most optimal timing for sleep should be either 30 minutes or less, or around 90 minutes. Sleeping for exactly an hour would allow your body to enter into REM sleep completely, making it a lot harder to wake up. A half an hour nap solve that by preventing your body from entering REM sleep, while granting you the much needed rest. A 90 minute nap, however, is a lot more effective. It allows your body to enter REM sleep without imposing any difficulty in you waking up.
