What helped the English defeat the Spanish armada?

The English were able to defeat the Spanish Armada due to a variety of reasons including very good luck.

  • Cannons- The Spanish cannons on board their ships were a mixture of different calibres, so in the heat of battle the gunners were having to hunt around for the right cannon balls slowing down the rate of fire. Also the cannons were muzzle loading meaning they had to be pulled back into the ship after every firing slowing the rate of fire further whilst on the English ships early breach loading guns were used with a standard size of cannon ball increasing the rate of fire.
  • Personnel- The Spanish had brought along a very bad selection of people for the task at hand. To start with there were more priests than trained gunners which isn't going to win you many wars. Also they had lots of men equipped for deck to deck fighting (which was their preferred means of attack) whilst the English stayed to far away for boarding to occur.
  • Ships-The types of ships were very important, the Spanish brought along galleons which were slow and cumbersome. The English on the other hand were using ships which were larger but lower in the water and far more manoeuvrable giving them an edge over the Spanish.
  • Fire- When the Spanish fleet was moored waiting for the army of Flanders to come to them the English deployed fire ships. In Tudor times fire ships were becoming a bit out of date but they performed their task to perfection. With these mountains of fire coming towards them the Spanish cut their anchors in their haste to flee and escape the fire. No ships were set on fire but some ran aground and the rest became heavily dispersed allowing the English to attack the smaller formation and drive them past their rendezvous point.
  • Communication-There was verticality no chance of the Army in Flanders knowing when it was to be picked up by the Armada, this left the ships in the open and vulnerable to attack.
  • THE WEATHER-The winds and storms around the British Isles was the biggest factor in the Armadas defeat, not the English. As these were sailing ships if they past heir objective it was very difficult to go back, after the fire ship and the Battle of Gravelines, the wind oh so nearly wrecked the entire fleet in shallow water, however they were saved at the last minute. The winds direction and the Royal navy in the channel forced the ships to go round the British Isles where they were picked off by violent storms and angry locals.

What was the name of the powerful Spanish fleet the British defeat during this time?

The Spanish Armada was a fleet of 130 ships that sailed from A Coruña in August 1588 as an escort to troops from Flanders for a planned invasion England to depose Queen Elizabeth and prevent English interference in the Spanish Netherlands and (hopefully) predation by English privateers.

Unfortunately for the Armada, bad choices by leaders, aggressive, effective attacks by the British and Dutch, bad weather, and general bad fortune prevented them from ever linking up with the army they were to escort and more than a third of the fleet was destroyed before they could make it back to Spain.

What food did the Tudors eat?

The Tudors mainly ate meat because the animals could be kept alive for use as food year round. The meat included oxen, deer, pigs, wild boar, badger, chicken, pigeons, sparrows, heron, crane, pheasant, woodcock, partridge, blackbirds, peacocks, larks, eel, quail, snipe, salmon, sole, turbot, whiting, lobster, crayfish, pike, and rabbit.

They ate fruits and vegetables such as artichokes, turnips, green peas, cucumbers, leeks, garlic, parsnips, skirrets (like parsnips), collards and kale (types of cabbage), lentils, turnips, broad beans, onions, spinach, carrots, beets, artichokes, radishes, asparagus, and olives, but only when they were in season.

Bread was served with every meal. They also ate fruit tarts, custards, quince pie, and cheese.

Seasonings and spices were used, especially to disguise the poor quality of the food.

Water was so polluted that they drank ale or wine with their meals. They also drank milk but there was no way to keep it fresh so milk had to be drunk the same day it was obtained.

Poorer people ate pottage which consisted of peas, milk, egg yolks, breadcrumbs and parsley which would be flavored with saffron and ginger.

A spanish galleon is a ship, a galleon, made in spain. Blackbeard used one, The queen annes revenge. and they are made in 1586

Correction to previous answer

"Blackbeard used one, The queen annes revenge." Actually, Blackbeard used a french guinea sailing vessel that was originally contructed in Britain called the Concorde. It had 26 cannons equipped and he later increased this number to 40 cannons and renamed it to Queen Anne's Revenge. I'm having trouble finding the name of the type of ship that it is other than a "french guinea sailing vessel".

I wish I knew the answer to that question, too! My great-great-great-great-great on back several more generations was with the Armada. He was one of the survivors of the storm which destroyed the Armada, somehow made it to land, and is listed in English records of the time as "a stranger." You can be certain, though, that conditions for the ordinary seamen were at best primitive and generally miserable.
