What kind is a large black spider with yellow markings?

It is likely a typical garden spider, also known by its scientific name, Argiope. They tend to live in gardens or fields. I often find them in my tomatoes. They are an orb weaver, which means they weave the typical web you think of when you think of a spider web, like on Charlottes Web, only without the fancy grammar :) Females are generally much larger than males. They are harmless to humans, not so good for bugs though. They are very beautiful, but their size tends to give people the heebie-jeebies.

How much a wolf spider weights?

I live in West Virginia and was raised on a farm, so I'm not a woman who shrieks and runs at the sight of insects, reptiles, etc. I've seen more than my share of wolf spiders, but not one the size that I'm about to describe, encountered in the early 1980's. My husband and I had just bought and moved into a house that we later discovered was infested with roaches because of water seeping into the basement through a crack in the concrete wall. Once detected, we took measures to alleviate the infestation. Anyway, during the first night in our new home, I got up to go to the bathroom. When I opened the bedroom door and flipped on the hall light, I looked down at the hardwood floor and stopped dead in my tracks. Between me and the bathroom was a wolf spider the size of an adolescent Tarantula! Legs and all, it would have easily covered the palm of my hand! To make matters worse, it was facing me and had assumed a defensive posture. In other words, it was reared back on its hind legs and its front legs were pawing the air! Fairly adept at interpreting body language, I got the message! Keeping my eyes fixed on the critter, I slowly backed into the bedroom to retrieve one of my husband's work boots, intending to kill the intruder. When I returned a few moments later, however, "Wolfie" was gone! It must have seen the look of the terminator in my eyes, or sensed death in the camp ... LOL! Needless to say, I slept with one eye open that night and thereafter. I never dreamed that a wolf spider could grow to that size, but this particular specimen was well-fed since its food source was abundant.

Spiders eat most of an insect. Some spiders are capable of chewing up the entire body of whatever it has caught, flooding the chewed up mass with digestive fluid, and then sucking up the digested food. Other spiders are not capable of chewing up the exoskeleton of a prey item, so they inject digestive fluids into the body, let the contents of the exoskeleton digest, and then suck that up.

In fact most British spiders have the ability to give a painful bite but are rarely dangerous. As far as I know, no fatalities from British spider bites have ever occurred but someone please correct this answer if I'm wrong. It should also be noted that there are a number of foreign "invaders" that have taken up residence that can give a very dangerous bite indeed, the Sydney Funnel Web spider along with scorpions have been found thriving in the London dock area. The Wasp Spider, previously only seen on the continent, is thriving in dorset and steadily spreading to other counties. Its bite though quite painful isn't thought to be dangerous.
