Why did France give the Statue of Liberty to the United States when the United States was in conflict with the French?

The Statue of Liberty (officially titled Liberty Enlightening the World) was presented by the people of France to the United States of America in 1886 to celebrate the US's centennial. France was not in any conflict with the USA at the time the Statue of Liberty was presented.

The only time in history where the independent United States went to war against France was in the year 1800 for about a month. (It was an undeclared war.) Aside from that, every war in which the United States and France fought, they fought together. Examples include: The American Revolution, War of 1812/Napoleonic Wars, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War (although the French had primarily withdrawn by the time that United States became involved), and the Persian Gulf War of 1991.

What were three reasons that France gave the Statue of Liberty to the US?

Historians cite three main reasons for the gift from France of the Statue of Liberty. They wanted to commemorate the centennial of the alliance between France and the US. That alliance was key to winning the American Revolutionary War. They also wanted to inspire their own citizens of the Third French Republic to emulate America's ideals of liberty and union. Additionally, they wanted to encourage other Europeans to end the various ideas of monarchy and especially hereditary monarchy. As an aside, the scheduled event almost never met its date of dedication in that the US had not yet collected funds for the cost of constructing the statue. Famous publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, made a nationalo appeal to complete the task.
