I was given some gammon steaks. I want to cook them for my boyfriend but I don't know how to. I am a student and live at uni so don't have access to a well stocked kitchen any ideas?

Wrap them in foil with whatever ingredients you have available - e.g tinned tomatoes and chilli/tabasco/worcester sauce, or pineapple (quite retro), or just butter (maybe plus a sliced onion and herbs). Cook for 20-40 minutes at 180 degrees C (depending on size of the gammon steaks). Serve with potatoes - in a pan bring to boil a litre of chicken stock (cube) with a couple of tbls butter. Add peeled potatoes and boil until the stock has reduced to nothing and the potatoes are browned by the butter. Serve.

Is Australia famous for steak?

Yes partly, traditional black 60 day Angus is very expensive and very sought after. Steak is not hugely popular as much as you might think... Most prefer outlandish dishes such as ox cheeks, or duck rissotto. Everyone knows of our great agriculture, however the Americans are probably the most famous for steak, but if you want something Australia is famous for try the STEAK and kidney pie....

The origin of the name "Porterhouse Steak" is uncertain. There are various Porter House hotels for which that honor is claimed. The Oxford English Dictionary attributes it to a hotel proprietor, Martin Morrison, who served it at his Pearl Street Porter House in Manhattan (NYC) in 1914. Others reference a Cambridge, Massachusetts, hotel run by Zachariah B. Porter.

Does your marinade cause ovens to catch on fire when broiling steaks because mine did?

My guess would be that the marinade contained oil. Oils will flame up at high temperatures or when in contact with something that is very hot. Most likely oil dripped onto the hot surface and flamed up, causing the oven to appear to be on fire. The same thing happens when fat melts onto the coals of a grill. I would suggest using a broiling pan to catch drippings in the future. A marinade with a high concentration of alcohol could have the same effect, although is not as likely because of the fast evaporation.

Another possibility is a dirty oven. Something already in the oven caught fire.

Why is steak an unhealthy food?

Opinion

Because steak is made with red meat, and red meat is bad for your organs.

Answer

It is not an unheallty food, in moderation. A 3 ounce serving of lean beef contributes just 10% of a 2000 calorie diet but it delivers more than 10% of the necessary daily intake of nine essential nutrients. Beef is the number one source of protein, B12 and Zinc. It is also the number three source of iron, behind cereals and grain. See the related link below:

How long to BBQ steak for medium?

Depends in the thickness of the steak, the heat of the grill, and the distance from the grilling element (charcoal, propane, etc.).

Hold your hand roughly an inch over the grill. If you can't hold it there for more than 2 seconds, that means a hot grill (Please be careful not to hurt yourself soing this!). A 1" thick steak at room temp would take about 3-4 minutes per side for medium. Colder grills and thicker steaks take longer of course.

And FYI -- this isn't BBQ -- this is grilling or grillade.

How do you tenderize steak?

Original Answer: you use a meat tenderizer. Its almost like a mallet but its usually metal

_______________________________________________________________

Improved Answer: Marinating the steak is not only a great way to impart flavor, but also an easy way to help tenderize a steak. There are two types of marinades to tenderize steak: acidic marinades, and enzymatic marinades.

Acidic marinades rely on acids to release proteins into the meat that tenderize the beef. Some common acidic marinade ingredients include, wine, vinegar, and lemon or lime juice. However, if these marinades are used too long, the proteins released will eventually make the meat even tougher. If using an acidic marinade, only soak the meat for two hours before using.

Enzymatic marinades have special enzymes that are released into the meat that tenderize them. These enzymes are most often found in fruits like pineapple or papaya. The calcium in dairy products can also use enzymes to break down meat.

The white, powdery meat tenderizer products on the market WILL tenderize steaks, however they typically contain MSG--an additive that many people are allergic to, which is why marinades are typically the best way to go when tenderizing a steak.

How do you cook a lamb steak in the oven?

Oh easy : ) We've been doing this at our family gatherings for years.

1. Bring a pot of chicken broth to a boil

2. Cut the steak into little penny sized niblets

3. Add the lamb niblets to the boiling broth and simmer for 4 to 5 hours

4. Strain the broth away and place the niblets on a cooking sheet

5. Chop some veggies and place them on the sheet as well

6. Microwave 5-8 packets of oatmeal, add water and place that around the outside of the sheet

7. Pre-heat the oven to 150, place the sheet inside the oven, and allow to bake for 5 hours

8. Remove the niblets and enjoy! Pesto!

This usually goes well with Peanuts or a bowl of Cap'n Crunch (For the little ones). If you've got the budget, add some caviar to the cooking sheet!
