The SPF rating on your sunscreen only pertains to the amount of protection from the UVB or burning rays. Tanning is actually the result of your body trying to protect its DNA within the nucleus of the skin cells. UVA rays are the rays that cause damage to the matrix of the skin, and the amount of UVA protection is not required as of now by the FDA on sunscreen packaging. The melanocytes, or cells responsible for producing melanin (tan) in your skin, are stimulated by any type of heat or trauma, so in answer to your question, it is possible to tan with a high SPF product. However, please be aware that DNA damage occurs with UV exposure, and can cause premature aging and skin cancer. Tanning booths offer a false sense of security, and can actually increase your chances of skin cancer. Your best bet is to use the self-tanners or go get a spray-on tan!!

A stand up tanning bed will give you a more even tan. A lay down tanning bed will show pressure points, and this will make that area of your skin to appear lighter. However recent studies have shown that tanning beds are no better for you than the sun.You may have been told this but it's wrong.Going on a tanning bed just once increases your risk of cancer by 40%.If you are under 18 and go on one just once it increases the risk by 75%. I would suggest you don't use a tanning bed at all.

How old do you have to be to go sun bed tanning?

Some tanning salons require users to be of legal age - 18 and over - or have a parent/guardian permission if the user is underage - younger than 18. The permission is requested upon first use and the parent/guardian is to sign the tanning bed use agreement at that time.

Some tanning salons do not have this requirement, however many will recommend the user to at least be a teenager - 11-13 and over - before laying. Check with your local salons to see what their requests are on this subject. Every tanning salon operates differently in different areas, countries, and states - depending upon policy.

Irrespective of your legal right to use tanning beds, worldwide medical opinion is that they damage skin, thereby increasing the risk of skin cancer and of premature skin aging. That is too heavy a price to pay for the Golden-Glow look born of vanity. In some sections of the U.S.A., dermatologists could fill their entire office schedule treating only patients who have skin damage, pre-cancer, and cancer as a result of exposure to sunlight and UV rays. Medical groups in the U.S.A. have been urging regulation or elimination of tanning beds, but the tanning bed companies have been arguing that tanning is not only harmless but is, in fact, beneficial. Ironically, the same battle went on over cigarettes and smoking.

Every state has different laws. In CA if you are under 18, you need a parent or guarding to sign the client profile UV tanning form. If you are under 14, you are not allowed to use UV tanning beds.

Yes. I'm not sure what those are exactly yet. I know there are because Dita Von Teese doesn't eat them in order to stay white.. Which is why I'm looking too.. Any foods with Canthaxanthin in it. ketchup, Ocean Spray cranberry juice, etc.

It's also found found naturally in foods such as: Mushrooms, eggs, fish.

Fish: Carp, Golden Mullet, Sea bream, Trush Wrasse, Pacific Salmon, Farm raised trout.

Canthaxanthin isn't exactly good for you. Google it.

How long do you need to stay out in the sun to get a tan?

You can't exactly go out for 2 minutes and expect a tan. Also, you have to wear sunblock because even with it on you will STILL get tan. (Not saying you need spf 80, but 15 or 8 would be good for a tan...a few tans is not worth a battle against skin cancer).

Tanning depends on your skin type too. So its hard to say because if you have very light skin, you might get a little burnt and turn tan (but its not very dark or anything), or if you have the skin of my best friend, you tan very quickly and noticeably.

Like I said it depends on your skin type, but either way wear at least a little sunscreen.

How long does tanning lotion last before it expires?

It depends on the ingredients and how you store it. Paraben-free lotion is very marketable right now for skin care lines and tanning salons, but lotions with parabens often extend the shelf life of indoor tanning lotions. Make sure the lotion you buy wasn't sitting on a shelf for years. Most tanning salons offer higher end lotions with higher quality ingredients than a lotion you could could buy at a supermarket. They contain things like dihydroxyacetone, natural bronzers, silicones, caffeine, tingles, coolants, blushes, vitamins, firming and toning formulas, anti-oxidants, after tan odor minimizers, etc to help nourish your skin, optimize your tanning capability, and overall enhance your tanning experience. Also, storing your indoor tanning lotion is important. Keep your bottle somewhere at room temperature. Don't leave it in a freezing cold car or a steaming hot garage when you are not using it. The temperature change can damage ingredients in the lotions. Also, never buy indoor tanning lotions online. You would never know what it really is or how it was stored.

Can a 13 year old get a spray tan?

Tanning is not a safe alternative to sunning. They used to say that you should get a nice healthy tan. There is really no such thing as a healthy tan. When your skin darkens it is because it is cooking. I know a lot of people that have had skin cancer and wished that they didn't go after that "healthy tan". If you insist on getting a tan then you should have your parents or guardians ask a tanning salon if they have an age restriction.

How long should you wait to go tanning if you have a sunburn?

Tanning with a sunburn is not a good idea because your skin needs time to heal itself. If you tan with a sunburn you could cause more damage to your skin and make the sunburn worse. Most likely resulting in skin peeling, increased chance of wrinkling and cancer. The best thing to do is wait for your sunburn to heal and make sure that you use the proper tanning lotions while tanning. Indoor tanning and outdoor tanning require different types of lotions and expose you to different types of UV light.
