The Ohio State University was founded as a land-grant university which means that it was founded by the state of Ohio to reap the benefits of the Morrill Act of 1862. The Morrill Act stated that each state would be given 30,000 acres of federal land for each member of Congress the state had as of 1860. This land was to be used to build a public college that taught agricultural, industrial and military classes.
One of the most prominent people involved with the founding of Ohio State was Rutherford B. Hayes who was Ohio's governor at the time. Hayes insisted that the University be located near Columbus and so it was built near Columbus.
