The Space Race

The launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 in 1957 marked the beginning of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. This event alarmed the United States and led to increased efforts to catch up in space technology and exploration.

Many people believe that the americans won it but that is not true. The US. was first to land on the moon but the russians were the first in space.

It helped with job growth

The Apollo 11 mission successfully landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin aboard the Lunar Module named "Eagle". Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon, followed by Buzz Aldrin. Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command Module.

The space race solely existed to prove which country could launch the largest H-bomb the farthest distance the most accurately without anyone having to launch real H-bombs.

Because the space race was a theoretical race, winning would be a matter of opinion. I consider that America "won" this race when the Astronauts of Apollo 11 were the first people to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. Many events happened following this historical event which led to the people of the world being the ultimate winner based on the use of satellite communication systems of today.

The money for the space race was primarily used to fund research, development, and construction of rockets, spacecraft, and other technological infrastructure necessary for space exploration. It also went towards training astronauts, launching missions, and operating space centers. Additionally, the space race had economic spin-offs that benefited various industries and contributed to technological advancements.

WW2 was fought in the late 1930s and early 1940s.The space race occurred in the 1960s and was between the USA and Russia.Russia had early success by putting the first man in space and the first unmanned rocket on the moon.The Americans were horrified and mortified.JFK then vowed to put a man on the moon before the decade was out with his famous speech which contained the line "we do this not because it is easy but because it is hard".Unfortunately he was not alive to see Neil Armstrong walk on the moon in 1969 but an estimated one billion people watched it live on tv.by the mid 1970s people lost interest in space exploration and the space race.Nowadays the USA and Russias space programs work quite closely together.

The Cold War was a very real thing and there was a very great concern of a nuclear exchange and all of a sudden this country that was our real enemy had jumped the gun and launched a satellite, and it was an enormous impact. The [American] public began to question our educational system, they questioned the Eisenhower administration. It was a time of very, very serious self-doubt across the whole society"

The 'space race diplomacy' refers to the competition mostly in the 1950's and 1960's between the United States and the USSR to achieve a number of firsts in space and to dominate it. Initially Russia led the way with the first satellite, first man and later woman in space, and first spacewalk - although some of the difficulties and shortcuts taken to achieve these were not revealed until much later. Eventually, the US took the lead and became the first to land a man on the moon. Nowadays, Russia and the US work side by side on the International Space Station. Both nations used this newly-born 'space race' to scare one another of the nuclear bombs both now possessed. (Ex: Sputnik was thought to be a nuke by the Americans at first).
