Is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre based on a true story?

Despite the disclaimer at the beginning of the original film, which touts the movie as "...an account of a tragedy which befell a group of five youths...For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare...This video cassette is based on a true incident and is definitely not for the squeamish..." in truth The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not really based on a true story.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre never happened in real life.

The filmmakers just wanted people to think it was a true story, so more people would go see the movie. It was also a bit of a joke on their part, to see if people would believe it was real. This is not an unheard-of tactic: for example, the 1999 movie the Blair Witch Project was also touted as a true story by the filmmakers, when in truth it is completely fictional and all the actors in it are alive and well to this day. The disclaimer at the beginning of the 1996 movie Fargo also asserts that it is a true story, when it is actually pure fiction.

The idea for the Leatherface character was inspired by the serial killer Ed Gein (see below). The director, Tobe Hooper, got the idea for the Leatherface character from the real case of the serial killer Ed Gein. The rest is completely fictional.

Ed Gein was only one man; he did not belong to a family of chainsaw murderers, and he lived in Wisconsin, not Texas.

Ed Gein murdered at least two women, one of whom was found hanging disemboweled and decapitated in his house, and also allegedly engaged in necrophilia and cannibalism with his victims' corpses. He did not, however, murder them with a chainsaw.

All fiction writers get their ideas from real life. Occasionally, a great idea will just come to you, seemingly from out of the blue, and you honestly have no idea where it came from. But for the most part, writers don't come up with ideas from nothing. They get their ideas from things they see and experience in the real world, be it personal experiences, or newspaper stories.

No the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not real. Some say Tobe Hooper based this movie on Ed Gein but Tobe has stated the idea first came to him when he saw a group of Texans standing around the chainsaw section in hardware store.

What happened to the survivor of the Texas chainsaw massacre?

It never says. But considering what she went through, she probably spent many years of her life after in a mental institution, on very heavy medications, or in daily therapy sessions.

I believe that at the beginning of Chainsaw Massacre 2 it mentions that she died in a mental hospital in 1983. The character's name was Sally Hardesty, and she was played by Marilyn Burns.

How do you sharpen a chainsaw?

Sharpening the chain correctly not only means you cut well, it is also vitally important for safetly. An improperly sharpened chain can become a safety hazard resulting in kickback etc so it is well worth getting someone who knows what they re doing to show you in practice as its a little hard to explain in words. Or even - go on a short chainsaw course...you learn alot of useful stuff and will feel much more confident about usage and sharpening.

Firstly you must get the right gauge round file for your chain. Each chain has different sharpening needs and most good garden shops will tell you what you need if you take them the chain or the numbers on the chain. Next take the chainbrake off, and put your saw into a vice so that the guide bar is clamped but the chain still can move. You can now begin to run the file along the teeth furthest away from you. Use long strokes away from you at the angles that are correct for your chain. Some chains have a line marked on them indicating the horizontal angle at which to hold the file, but you may need to tilt the file vertically as well. Getting a guide which fits over your file will help hugely, and they are well worth it. You will only need 3 or 4 strokes on each tooth - little and often is the key. you will notice the dull tooth becomes bright and sharp. Also remember where you start - you can do this with a marker pan or if you use stihl chains find the double teeth where the chain joins. It is important to sharpen each tooth the same amount so that your saw will cut straight and true, so do the same number of strokes on each tooth, then turn the saw around and do the other side so that you are always working on teeth furthest away from you. Some people like to use calipers to make sure that every tooth is the same length - this is practical if your in a workshop but not if in the field as it is time consuming. Once all the teeth are sharp you may need to file the rakers down. Use a flat file and again use long strokes away from you. You can also buy metal guides so that you do not take too much off. If you do your saw will lick back at you as it digs too much into the wood.

Thats it! With a bit of practice your chain will cut like new. Wear golves to do any type of saw maintenance. And remember chainsaws are dangerous bits of kit. Wear chainsaw trousers, chainsaw boots, chainsaw gloves and a chainsaw helmet providing ear and eye protection. I've seen and heard of some nasty accidents so these arent just health and safety checkboxes. Good luck!

How many people were killed in the Texas Massacre?

Sorry, there is/was no such person as "Leatherface", nor was there ever a real Texas Chainsaw Massacre in Texas or any other location in the world for that matter.

The story is VERY LOOSELY based upon Ed Gein, a man from Plainfield, Wisconsin in the 1950's, who murdered only a few women and used parts of their bodies for clothing and furniture. There wasn't even a chainsaw involved in the murders. Ed's story inspired many fictional stories and movies including Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, the movie Ed Gein, Three on a Meathook, Deranged, and several others. He was eventually caught and put in a mental institution in Wisconsin. He never entered the Texas justice system as thought by many. Gein never even visited Texas in his life. He died in Wisconsin in 1984 in a mental institution of natural causes.

The story of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an original idea created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel in 1973. Tobe knew of the story of Ed Gein and incorporated his idea of using a chainsaw to create the Leatherface character. If there ever was any "chainsaw massacre" of any kind, anywhere, it is totally unrelated, completely coincidental and had no bearing or impact on Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel's creative process during the production of their 1974 film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a HUGE urban legend known by many people around the world. If your friend or family member swears that it happened, or they personally knew Leatherface in prison, etc., they're not alone. They're either lying or they themselves have been lied to.

However in the Movie's:

5 People are killed in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

7 People are killed in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

6 People are killed in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)

4 People are killed in Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1994)

5 People are killed in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

6 People are killed in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

Why was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre banned?

It was a fairly disturbing film for the time period that it was released, and it still is to this day if you are in the right mood. The grittiness of it in conjunction with the fairly creepy and ominous score that is present in every scene practically, really kind of lays the seed of terror and just being sort of uncomfortable. At least this is my interpretation as to why it was banned, because as horror movies go, it's fairly bloodless till the end. Not to mention, there was a time that up till the mid to late 80's, horror movies were considered for the most part low brow and not in very good taste. They then practically died off (commercially speaking) till the mid to late 90's, so this worked against it as well probably since it was released in a part of history that horror films still really offended people. Anymore this day and age, the worst that can be thrown at you, you've probably seen tenfold on the news.

How does The Texas Chainsaw Massacre end?

The original film ends with the last survivor -- Sally -- escaping from Leatherface. He chases her onto a road, where she flags down a passing pickup truck. She climbs in the back and the truck pulls away, narrowly escaping Leatherface's chainsaw.

As she realizes she is actually escaping for real, she starts laughing insanely and hysterically, as she is understandably very traumatized. Leatherface is left behind on the road, swinging his chainsaw around in frustration.
