What is the lifespan of varroa mites?

Varroa destructor (previously called varroa jacobsoni) is a major parasite of honey bee colonies. The mites reproduce on a 10-day cycle. The female mite enters a honey bee brood cell and when the cell is capped, she lays one male eggs on the larva and several female eggs. The young mites hatch and the male will mate with the young females in about the same time as the young bee develops. When the young bee emerges from the cell after pupation the female varroa mites also leave and spread to other bees and larvae, and the males die. The mite preferentially infests drone cells: these have a longer pupation time which allows more mites to be produced.

Research has shown that the lifespan of a female varroa mite is two to three months in the summer, and six to eight months in the winter.

Why do you have so much dust in your house?

Dust is a combination of dead skin cells, various small fibers (from your clothing, tissues, etc.), pet dander/fur, and sometimes dust mites. Since all the residents of your household are always producing more and more dead skin cells, dust is constantly being made. Also, every time you touch fabric or tissues, the motion sends a spray of loose fibers (which you may or may not be able to see) into the air.

Where do ticks live?

The ground can be considered the home in which ticks live. Eggs, laid on the ground by females, hatch into larvae, which feed and molt into nymphs on the ground. Sandy soil in a landscape of deer, hardwood trees, and water provide an ideal habitat for ticks to live and thrive.

Does dust have a mouth?

No, actually dust is a mixture of dirt and dead skin particles. Sometimes there is a mixture of hair too. However there are tiny bugs that live in dust called dust mites. These microscopic bugs feast on the dust they live on. Dust mites have mouth, but they are too small to bite anything except for dust.

What is peracetic acid?

Peracetic acid, also called peroxyacetic acid, is an organic peroxide and has the formula CH3CO3H. It forms an equilibrium with acetic acid [CH3COOH] and hydrogen peroxide [H2O2], such that if you mix hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid together, peracetic acid will be formed. Solutions of peracetic acid in water and acetic acid are colorless liquids with a pungent but not unpleasant odor. Peracetic acid, like most organic peroxides, is unstable and can explode at temperatures that exceed 230F as the water is driven off. Therefore, as with any peroxide, operations resulting in heating or evaporating the solution should be avoided.

Peracetic acid is a strong oxidizing agent, and finds extensive use in healthcare and the food industry as a disinfectant and sterilant. Peracetic acid is a primary irritant, a mutagen [See NIOSH RTECS database] and so contact with both the liquid and the vapor are potentially hazardous.

OSHA has not set permissible exposure levels yet for peracetic acid, but employers should still ensure that employees are protected from exposure under the General duty clause [in section 5 of the OSH Act of 1970 in the US, and similar laws in other countries]. In the US, the EPA has determined acute exposure guidelines for peracetic acid. If using peracetic acid, it is important to ensure that there are adequate engineering controls in place, ventilation and continuous monitoring to prevent vapor exposure, personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, apron etc) and spill kits if there is a possibility of a spill.

Can a tick bite in several places on a dog within a short period of time?

Well once a tick bites, it sucks all the blood and then buries itself into the fur. So one tick can only bite in one area because once it fills with blood, it can't fill up with more.
