Is it dangerous to put bug killer on green bean and tomato plants?
It can kill more insects than you need to. It can be sprayed or dusted on the leaves to keep beetles and grasshoppers from eating them but overuse will kill the leaves. It can be used on the ground and on the stalks of the plants to kill pill bugs and cutworms but this will also kill the worms and possibly the bacteria that the plant needs in the soil. You should not use any poisons when the plant has blooms on it as this will kill the pollenators that the plant needs to propagate. For some pests, its best to just pick them off by hand and kill them, such as catepillars and hookworms, also known as the tobacco worm. Most poisons that are used like malathion and sevin dust are water soluable and can be washed off of the beans or tomatoes with plain cold water.
What is the best way to prune tomato plants for maximum fruit yield?
remove all suckers and leaves below the first flower cluster, let the second stem rise from the node just above the lowest flower cluster, let the third stem arise from the second node above the first flower cluster. Get plants off the ground, give them room and a firm stake to hold them up. Another way of putting it would be to remove all suckers from between the stem and the original leaf growth and leave flower growths on the main stem only
Is it true that most stores like Publix and wal-mart have tomatoes with petroleum based wax on them?
Yes this is true. I have read research papers from the USGT that explain that they put the wax on them to preserve the favor and smell of the dirty Mexicans who picked them.

Can stewed tomatoes be put in a meat loaf?
Yes, stewed tomatoes or picante sauce can be substituted in equal amounts for any recipe that calls for tomato juice or ketchup. My family likes to put their ketchup on the meat loaf after it is cooked, so using tomato juice or ketchup in the recipe was to much, but the stewed tomatoes give the dish a milder flavor. The picante sauce spices it up.

Are tomatoes as good as supermarket tomatoes?
Everyone might not agree, but home grown and farmer's market tomatoes are almost always BETTER than supermarket tomatoes as far as texture and taste goes. Nutritionally, they could be about the same, but it depends on how they are grown. If they are grown in nutrient-rich soil, the home grown ones are likely to have better nutrition.
It depends on how ripe the tomato is; if it is very firm, it is not ripe yet. Perfectly ripe tomatoes are slightly firm but give a bit when squeezed.
You can put a wooden stake in the ground near the plant and tie the plant to it every few inches or your can buy tomato cages at the garden center.

Where did the hillbilly farmers get Tommy toe tomato plants come from?
Every "Where do they come from" answer I've ever seen on the Internet says they came from Australia, the Ozarks in the US or that they were bred by someone.
I grew up in the Appalachians in Southwestern West Virginia and it was common knowledge that Tommy Toe tomatoes were a mutation of regular tomatoes that were eaten by hogs and excreted into the hog lot.
The passage through the hog gut apparently caused a mutation in the tomato seeds, which then grew as Tommy Toe tomatoes. These Tommy Toe plants could be found growing wild around any hog lot were tomato scraps were fed to the hogs, along with other food scraps.
And that isn't a bunch of crap. It's true. Any other folks from the country that knows this to be true?
Well,it depends if you leave it there for a day it may survive but if longer than 3 days you have no chance=Hope i helped.x=
How do you cook diced tomatoes?

How do you get green tomatoes to turn red?
The Lighter Side....
First, count the tomatoes. Figure one small can per dozen; one large can per 3-dozen. Go to the store. Buy correct size can of paint, color: red. Buy appropriate sized paint brush. Note: If you plan to paint on eyes, nose, etc., small brushes and contrasting color of paint is best. Return home and line up your tomatoes, just like Eggs at Easter time. Have fun!
On a more serious note....
It's tough to get green tomatoes to "turn" this time of year unless you've still got some strong sunlight. My mom used to brown-paper bag them and place bag and tomato in the sun. Don't refrigerate or they'll stay green till they rot.
If the above fails....
Fried green tomatoes taste yummy.
Do tomato plants like ashes added to soil?
Yes! I do it for my garden and we get nearly a thousand tomatoes! ( but we have a big garden so don't expect that many).
