The manual says to unplug the fuel pump ( there's a visitation window if you lift the back seat of your car) but you can skip this step- just use a rag aroung the fittings when you remove the lines to the filter. You need a 17mm socket with an extension for the top fitting and a 17mm open wrench for the bottom one. Do the top one first, this way you won's spill too much gas. To remove the filter I had to first remove the mounting hardware ( 2 bolts hold the bracket) - to get access to one of the bolts I had to remove one of the bolts holding the carbon filter and I pushed the carbon filter to one side.
