How do you reset the idle on a 87 Toyota Tercel?
Ok, on the pass side, bottom of carb you should see a hole or plug inserted into hole just above the egr valve. If plugged, drill it out to get access to idle air mixture screw. With car off start by turning in all the way, then back out 3 1/4 turns. start car and adjust back/forth till you get the highest idle. Then set idle speed screw (check under hood label)...repeat the entire process again. HOWEVER, if you've done nothing to the vehicle and the idle has gone south, I would pull the EGR valve off first. I'll bet it's jam packed full of carbon deposits. Clean it, re-install and check idle before messing with carb. If you have a hand vacumme (for bleeding brakes), apply vacumme to the egr after cleaning it. If vehicle doesn't die, the EGR is bad. Good luck...
I'm thinking that anything that is polarity sensitive might have been damaged, including the engine control unit. The voltage regulator and alternator diodes may have been blown.
First if u you can get engine to run long enough, get a spray bottle with water and apply light mist around coils and wires. At night time you should see small electrical sparks around area if there is bad part, also see if engine stalls or gets worse, if not, shut off engine and check wiring harness connections. If that doesn't help, remove coils in top on engine, one coil supplies spark for 2 adjacent cylinders, check for cracks in coils, bad wires or loose connectors, maybe even breaks in spark plug wires. Check for water or rust down on spark plug holes. Likely your just over due for changing the spark plugs, always use new plugs from your Toyota dealer. I that doesn't cure problem, try putting some fuel line antifreeze in next time you fuel up, also try a different supplier. Can also check air filter to see if its plugged. also can replace fuel filter, basic maintence goes a long way. Not scare you but by now if the problem isn't cured there may be an injector or internal engine problem, bring it to your favoite mechanic to check it out... How do you fix a 1987 Toyota Tercel's heating fan?
the fan is under the glovebox. if you look under there you'll see a circular black plastic base with 3 tabs that the screws go through to secure it to the heater assy. it has a plug in it. remove the plug and put a test light between the 2 wires. turn the key to the on position(engine not running), and turn the fan on. the light should come on in all 3 or 4 fan positions. if it does remove the fan by taking out the 3 screws and replace it. if the light wont come on in any position, you probably have a blown heater fuse or a bad switch. if the light only comes on in the high position(in this case the blower would also have worked on high i suspect) the blower resistor is bad. its a small plate(1 1/2"x2 1/2") on the heater near the blower held in with 2 screws. just remove the screws and replace it to restore the lower blower settings.

How do you fix fuel gauge on 1996 tercel?
There is a float. If you're inside the cockpit facing the back seat it's on your left. It's mounted to the fuel pump mount. I had this same problem with my '96 Tercel when I installed a Supra fuel pump. It WAS in fact "sticking". I pulled the assembly out again and made sure the "wire stick" that holds the float wasn't bent, then, i "lubed" it with some good old WD-40 and reinstalled. Turned the car on and BAM works like new. You must be very carefull not to bend the wire holding the float in place because it doesn't get a whole lot of clearance inside the tank and can easily get caught on a wall.
