Underground Railroad

The economy had been severely damaged during the war, especially in the South. It needed to be rebuilt.

Foreign investment was also important. Foreign countries were able to trade with the South after the war.

The Foreign Policy

The Underground Railroad was a series of free blacks and Northerners who were against slavery that would guide slaves up to the North to Freedom. It wasn't an actual railroad, but at times it went underground to hide slaves. It was coined "Underground Railroad" so slave masters wouldn't know what it really was, and it was almost like a railroad. The main people who came directly to the slaves and guided them along the "Railroad" were coined "conductors". One very famous conductor is Harriet Tubman, also nicknamed "Black Moses".

The underground railroad was very successful because no slave owners knew about it. Also, there was no way for anyone to track the slaves, so the slaves could leave without anyone noticing. Another reason is that many people, including Harriet Tubman, helped the slaves along the way. Many people wouldn't have thought that slaves would be that smart so there was no suspicion.

The Underground Railroad lead to Mexico, New York, even Canada. It led to Canada because Canada did not allow slavery

Harriet Tubman was receptive to John Brown's ideas. Brown was impressed by her work on the Underground Railroad. Because she was very familiar with the topography of western Virginia , she shared that information with Brown. She also agreed to enlist Black recruits from Canada. Her help to Brown was chronicled in the plans found in Brown's Maryland farmhouse.

Slaves heard about the underground railroad mainly by word of mouth form other slaves that knew about it. It was obviously kept very quiet so they would be able to escape from their masters.

She helped create the underground railroad. Because she helped many African American slaves escape to Canada, including her family she was a great addition to the war against slavery. They (the whites) were on the hunt for Harriet, but that did not stop her she still lead a army of runaway slaves to the home of the free Canada.

The stationmaster provided a shelter for the "passengers" using the railroad. They were called stationmasters because their homes were like Train stations, and obviously, they were the master.

The South had several advantages over the North. First, the South was fighting for preservation; if they lost the war, the North would crush their government and re-absorb them back into the Union. These Southern men were fighting for a cause they believed in, which makes them much more motivated and determined than their Northern counterparts, who were on a campaign to conquest. Second, for the latter portion of the war the battles were fought on Southern territory. This increased a soldiers resolve because they were defending their children, their wives, their mothers and everything they held dear to them.

there was just one main group which was called the antislavery groups which had many different antislavery groups attached to the main one.

The Underground railroad was a organization was not an actual railroad but was a network of people who arranged transportation and hiding places for fugitives, or escaped slaves.

The Underground Railroad was a secret travel network for slaves in the 1800s. It was not an actual train, but rather a series of secret safe routes and safe houses. Some people agreed to hide slaves in their houses along the way, and some even transported them in wagons and such. The slaves were trying to escape to free states (states which didn't have slavery) and Canada, where slavery was illegal. One important person who helped this operation was Harriet Tubman. She was a former slave who made 13 trips back and forth on the "railroad" to lead others to freedom.
