The end of a war means that the soldiers stopped being shot, blown up and dying. The nation could quit spending billions of dollars making jeeps, airplanes, artillery, rations packs, bandages, shoes, etc etc.

But on the other hand, many people were put out of work at the jeep factories, airplane factories, shoe factories, and bandage factories. Despite what some claim, the end of World War 2 was not great for the economy, yet the economy did OK, probably because people like you and me could stop donating money to the war effort, and start spending it in stores -- that is GOOD for the economy!

Prior to the announcement, girls were dressed appropriately for whichever activity they were involved in. If they were working as a waitress, they dressed in their uniform. If they were on leave from the service, or stationed state side, they wore their uniforms as well. If they were nurses, factory workers, or students, they wore uniforms, dungarees, or school clothes. Once the victory was announced, many women changed into their church clothes and attended masses around the country.
