Veterans Day Holiday

When it begain, it was first proclaimed Armistice Day by Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It became an official holiday in 1938. Some countries still refer to it as Armistice Day. The name was changed to Veterans Day and the scope expanded in 1954.

Yes - when the observance originated, WWI (The Great War) was so terrible on so many levels, it was thought there would never be another, so the day the Armistice was signed (the 11th hour of the 11thday of the 11th month)was made a holiday. Well, when WWII, Korea and Vietnam came along, it was decided to not continue to observe the end of these wars by another holiday (just too many to be productive), but to commemorate the end of all the wars by simply making one day, Veteran's Day.

Even Active Duty Military Veterans might not get the Day off, my husband served multiple tours in Iraq but now is a Drill Sergeant and for them this is a regular training day which means off to work he goes. And actually today he'll be gone all day and all night :-)

An accurate number is unavailable due to the inability to reconcile the still-living amongst the WW2-Korean War survivors, and the recent (2013-2014-2015) sesquestration that is cutting 30% from the USMC-USN-US Army-AF active-duty ranks.

Veteran's Day is a national holiday in the US. It allows citizens to participate in military ceremonies, parades, and anything that remembers the service of all veterans.

The 30 September 2007 Veterans Administration estimate places the daily deaths of WWII US veterans at 1,000 per day. These Veterans are now in or about to reach their 80's. How many Vietnam vets are dying each day?

World War 1 ended in 1918 on November 11th with the Armistice. That Armistice was commemorated as the end of the worst conflict ever to occur in global history. The name was changed to Veterans Day to include those that served in World War 2 and other conflicts.

At the time, WWI was the "war to end all wars." When the treaty was signed, it was the Great Armistice since there wouldn't be any more "great" wars. Since then there have of course been many wars and it's now called Veterans Day to honor all vets.

The armistice ending the hostilities of World War I went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 (11:00, November 11, 1918.) (WWI did not officially end until June 28, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.) The first Armistice Day was celebrated on November 11, 1919 to honor all who had served in the military during "The Great War." It was not until June 1, 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, that November 11 was officially renamed as Veterans Day and was designated to honor veterans of all wars in which the US had been involved.

I know for sure that Britain, Austalia and Canada have "rememberance day" which is smilar, but in it is like memorial day and veterans day, and in the others it is most similar to memorial day. Britain had theirs on the Sunday closest to Nov. 11, but Canada has it on nov.11

Veterans are important because of the sacrifice and risk that they undertook on behalf of their country and its citizens. Whether voluntary or draft, they were at risk to protect the rights and freedoms of the rest of the citizens. They served so that you didn't have to.

Remembering veterans is a way to honor the people in the military for what they have done and are doing and the sacrifices they have made, including their lives, to ensure our way of life. Veterans are very important people and I think they should be honored in numerous ways. Veterans should be honored because they once dedicated themselves into doing a noble act. The ultimate sacrifice that was given by few veterans to benefit the many people of the United States of America was provided by many years in ghastly wars and battles. Put the politics aside and just consider the soldier who doesn't make much money, get much time off, or is away from his family months at a time but still, people in the military have a fundamental belief they are protectors of our country. Veterans put their lives at peril because they wanted to fight for their nation's freedom. Instead of sitting down on a snug armchair with a soft robe on sipping tea, they go out and fight for what's right. Veterans sacrificed the time spent with their family because they go out to battle other troops, not being able to be in the same room as their loved ones. Veterans contributed their efforts to make the U.S safe, even though they could have passed away at any second.

The question is misplaced, it's not what veterans do for us, it's, what veterans did for us!. Veterans gave themselves completely and solely to defend this nation in the event of war. Our veterans are the backbone of this country.?
