Why should you be thankful for veterans?

One of the reasons why it is important to be thankful for veterans is that these people are willing to put their lives on the line. They go to war zones and are willing to face danger and death. They have no intention to gain any fame. They do it so that the country people get peace and live with peace. Joining the military is a voluntary act and cant be forced on anyone. Also, these soldiers leave behind all wealth, family and friends and go to sacrifice their lives. Sometimes you never get to hear from them and they never get an opportunity to see their family. Yet they make this sacrifice. So it is important that the people of the country honor their veterans.

Why was it called armistice day?

An armistice is a truce or a ceasefire allowing for peace talks or discussions. Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918, when German high command capitulated to Allied forces at Compiègne, France.

What year was the first Veterans Day celebrated?

Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day because the armistice ending the hostilities of World War I took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918 French time. (This date was not the official end of WWI as many people think. That happened on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versialles.) Armistice Day was first observed on November 11, 1919, one year later! In 1954 the holiday was renamed as Veterans Day.

Are thailand veteran's considered veitnam veterans?

This will probably annoy many "Boots On Ground" advocates, however I believe Thailand Veterans are "Vietnam Veterans". During the Vietnam war our bases in Thailand were attacked five times by Vietnam Sappers. Also tactical herbicides was used on the perimeters of every base in Thailand. Our Thailand Veterans, loaded weapons on the planes to fulfill the missions in Vietnam and protect the "Boots On Ground" troops. Air Force Personnel volunteered to man secret radar sites in Laos to guide bomb strikes, etc. in Vietnam and many lost their lives when those sites were over run. Some want to call Thai Veterans "Vietnam Era Veterans" the same designation someone that served in Germany during the war might be called. I honor those that did serve in Germany and all other areas during the Vietnam War but to refer to those who served in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia as anything other than Vietnam Veterans is an insult to the service they performed in the defense of bases in Thailand and the support of the troops on the ground in Vietnam. I believe those that died in Laos and in at least one bunker explosion at a Thai base are listed on the wall. We shared the same experience as other Vietnam Vets on our return in 69 and 70 from the public, we share the same health issues from Agent Orange as our brothers who served in-country. Air Force Security Police, Thailand 69-70.

How can people help veterans?

Honoring Hospitalized VeteransYou can pay them a visit and tell them we haven't forgotten them. You can thank them for protecting the U.S.A.!

I agree, pay them a visit. Remember that the VA Hospital is there year around, one does not just have to visit on Veterans Day. The Vets in the hospitals might like the paperback books you have read. Some of these Vets do not have any family who care.

I agree with the above answers and would like to add one of my own. Talk to them. Better yet, listen to them. You will be amazed at how much you will learn. Many of their stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry. The most important thing, though, is that they will know they are not forgotten, that their service means something. If you love your country, thank a veteran.

I also agree, veterans need company in the hospital. As long as they are around you should tell them how thankful you are, they would really appreciate it.

You know what's funny, i ALSO agree!!!You should pay them a visit and/or give tham flowers.listen to their stories and how they surrvived.Thank then for helping us be free!

Generally, war veterans love nothing more than talking about the war. Remember that it was their war. Ask them specific questions about the regions where they were stationed during the battles or in between the fighting. You may do it on a return visit after researching which questions might be most interesting for the former soldiers. Usually, their relatives are tired of hearing the stories over and over again. Therefor, imagen how happy a veteran will be to find some new attentive ears.
