Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls looks incredible. You can see the cloud of spray from miles away.

In the dialect of the Kololo or the Lozi, it means "the smoke that thunders". Mosi-oa-tunya is the native name for Victoria Falls in Africa. The name is also applied to the national park in Zambia, which is across the Zambezi River from Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe.

David Livingstone gave Mosi Oa Tunya its English name Victoria Falls in honor of Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria was best known for her nearly 64-year reign (1837-1901). It was the longest in British history, and even became known as the Victorian Era.

The Zambezi River

I don't believe there is a Swahili name for the Falls. The local name , Mosi-oa-Tunya is from Shona or Bemba. Swahili is from the area about 1,000 miles north east of the Victoria Falls area.

I might add, David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European recorded to view the Victoria Falls. He was in the area of Zambia and Zimbabwe where the falls are located. He died in 1873.
