Established in the 1600’s, the port city of Hampton has many interesting sites for visitors to explore.

The proximity to the Chesapeake Bay means that there are miles and miles of beachfront to enjoy. In addition to the traditional public beach at Buckroe Beach, Hampton also features Grandview Beach, which is located in a nature preserve. Grandview Beach is accessed by a ½ mile hike through the Grandview Nature Preserve and is absolutely beautiful.

History buffs may enjoy touring Fort Monroe, which is the largest star fort ever built in this country. Originally designed to protect the entrance to the port of Hampton, Fort Monroe also served as a prison during the Civil War. One of its most famous prisoners was Jefferson Davis, who was kept there after his capture towards the end of the Civil War.

Hampton is also home to NASA’s Langley Research Center, as well as the Virginia Air and Space Museum. The museum features an in-depth look at aviation history and space exploration.

How do you think the Africans felt when they were brought to Virginia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The British colony of Jamestown was founded in 1607. Some twenty or so years later a Portuguese ship with African slaves came to Jamestown and sold the Africans into slavery. Most slaves had to feel dehumanized by being slaves and if they had been sold into slavery by African chiefs or Arabic slave traders they must have felt betrayed. Slavery in the Western Hemisphere was finally abolished by Brazil late in the 19th century.
