Willie Thrower was the first African American to play quarterback in the NFL. He signed with the Bears in 1952 for $8,500 as a back-up to George Blanda. In his only performance on Oct. 18 1953, in relief of Blanda, Thrower went 3 of 8 passing for 27 yards and an interception in a 35-28 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Washington Redskins defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 20-17, in a hard-fought contest at RFK Stadium that may have solidified a young Dallas team's resolve to return to respectability. The 1992 Cowboys, in the fourth year of the Jerry Jones-Jimmy Johnson era, were 11-2 and needed one win to claim their first NFC East title since the 1985 season. The defending world champion Redskins were 8-5 and looking for a wild-card berth in the playoffs.

Dallas led 17-7 at halftime, and things seemed to be in hand until a disastrous fourth quarter in which the Cowboys fumbled three times. Washington staged an exciting comeback, highlighted by Redskins safety Danny Copeland's recovery of a Troy Aikman fumble for a touchdown. Aikman had attempted to pass while in the Cowboys' end zone with about three minutes remaining in the game. Copeland's touchdown put Washington ahead to stay, 20-17.

The Cowboys' nightmare loss turned into a tense postgame situation for the team. Coach Johnson's customary conference with the media was a terse one, lasting less than two minutes. Johnson's displeasure was even more noticeable on the team's charter flight home. The Cowboys' head coach ordered flight attendants not to serve meals to the players and staff. He even yelled at a couple of team members to make sure his message was getting across.

After the debacle in Washington, the Cowboys didn't lose another game on the road to a 16-and-3 overall record and their first Super Bowl title since January 15, 1978.

Prior to 2011 that was 1982 ... the Bills defeated the Chiefs and Vikings, the Redskins defeated the Eagles and Buccaneers, and the Lions defeated the Bears and Rams.
