How long does it take for the fur to grow on a westie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

By one year old their fur should be full. Like many very furry breeds, Westies do go through an "uglies" stage where it seems like they will never be in full coat, especially the thick ruff of hair around the face seems to come about slowly. But do not worry!! The fur WILL come in and your Westie will be in beautiful full snow-white coat by one year in age.

How much do newborn westie puppies cost?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It really depends on where you buy it from. from a good breeder, they cost about 600-1000. from a previous owner, it depends on how old there adults are less and puppies are more. A puppy with a good pedigree that meets all the standards for the breed will sell upwards of 1500 with female pups being a few hundred dollars more than the males. Some puppies are as high as 2800.

Are there such a thing as a teacup westie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, but they are not an AKC standard. AKC only recongizes Miniatures which is under 11 lbs and standard which is 16 lbs and over. Dachshunds make amazing pets. I have 2 myself and they're wonderful obedient VERY easy to train and loyal companions. My mother in law and sister in law have dachshunds as well. In fact they got me started realizing how amazing they are. They're enegetic, courageous personalities. They always bark if someone is at the door which may be annoying to some but makes me feel safe that i know someone is coming. I completely recommend a dachsund as a pet if you're looking for one.

What is the purpose of hand stripping a West Highland Terrier?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hold up your Westie's hair between your fingers. You should see two layers. The bottom layer is white, growing, live hair. The top layer is the dead hairs. Just pull out the dead hairs. Do this all over the body until he/she looks even. This may take an hour or two. Wearing surgical gloves makes the job a lot easier because you get a better grip on the hair. This does not hurt them, you are just pulling out the dead hairs. You should do this every week or two to keep them looking neat and non-shedding.

It changes with the season, its called a winter nose.

Or, if your dog is old, it's just that his/her life is getting to the senior age.

Do not put anything on your dogs nose to change it. No madder what anyone says, it's toxic.

Asked by Wiki User

The term is "cropped" it is done at a young age before completion of nerve ending development, the original purpose of cropping ears was for work or guardianship, if their is less ear-leather to be bit, pulled, snagged, or torn less injury would happen to the dog many breeds are cropped: Boxers, Great Danes, Dobermans, Miniature Pinchers, Affenpincher, pitbull terriers, Beaucerons, cane corsos, schnauzers the list goes on and on and on. As pets the look is just that purely cosmetic and personal choice

Are westies yappy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

We have one and he's a very good dog, he's a little over a year old now. He is VERY intelligent and was easy to train, with the exception that it did take longer to housebreak him then it took to housebreak our Golden Retriever. But tiny dogs have tiny bladders after all, so we had to wait until he was big enough to be fully housebroken.

He's extremely friendly, love kids, and gets along fine with other dogs and even cats!! He WILL chase bunnies and squirrels though, but these dogs WERE bred to hunt small wild animals. We were told that Westies are NOT lap dogs and not very cuddly ... but our little guy apparently never read those parts of his breed description because he IS a lap dog and loves to be picked up and cuddled!!
