A lot of water is absorbed and held by the ground in wetlands. by paving these areas all of the water from rain runs directly to drainage and and overloads the system. rather then having some retained in the wet lands. The same sort of thing can happen with chopping down forests the trees and leaves and plants hold back an enormous amount of the water that comes down in rain.

Depends on the animal. Birds usually have longer legs, like herons. Alligators look like floating debris. Dragonflies lay their eggs near the water, on stems. Animals like manatees depend on their size, and eat plants. May creatures have webbed feet, and have strong legs, for swimming.

In reality the negative effects of draining wetlands vastly outweighs any benefit you receive. You get habitat destruction for many endangers species, increased risk of flooding, and water becomes more polluted (wetlands help absorb and reduce pollution). That being said draining a wetland can provide some, very minimal, positive effects. First is it creates crop land, most wetland drainage in the US is to create new areas for farmers to grow crops. Secondly is disease control, there are a few water-borne diseases that can be found in wetland as well as mosquitoes that may carry them. However this is really not a benefit with modern medicine and mosquito control that we have.

Swamps, along with many other wetlands (bogs, marshes, mangroves, ect.) are actively being filled in and plowed over to make room for places of recreation and houses, even factories that sometimes release chemicals into the wetland environment. The wetlands are like the sponge for cleaning; wetlands provide a source of freshwater. They soak up all the bad things in the water, creating freshwater. People need to protect these resources! This would be true for oceans too... but I'm less familiar with the area and the plants involved. Salt water has a tendency to be less forgiving to plants.
