Why are white rhinos nearly extinct?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Congo rebels have hunted one of the world's rarest rhinos almost to extinction. Only 22 northern white rhinos are alive in their last remaining wild refuge - down from 30 last year.

Unless urgent action is taken, the rhino will be extinct within months, conservationists say.

Rebel troops are killing the northern white (Ceratotherium simum cottoni), a sub-species of the white rhino that used to be found across central Africa, for their horns, which they sell for more than pounds 4500 ($A11,000) a pair to Yemeni craftsmen, who make traditional daggers from them.

The troops use the proceeds to buy guns, rocket launchers and grenades for their war against the Government and rival factions.

Congo park rangers say they cannot protect the animals against the heavily armed rebels. The poachers have killed one ranger and wounded another. The rebels - from Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and Congo - are poaching the rhino from its only refuge, the Garamba National Park in the north-east corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

One rhino was killed last month and rangers fear more may be dead after a recent aerial survey spotted only 22 animals. Elephants, hippos and big cats have also been killed in the park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cathy Dean, director of Save the Rhino International, a British-based charity, says the situation is catastrophic.

"These rhinos are on the brink of extinction," she said. "For us to lose a whole sub-species would be disastrous."

Four of the five species of rhinos are critically endangered.
Blame it on the poachers. They uncontrollably killed the poor white rhinos for their horns. I know it sounds sad but it was also to do with farmers with their farm land and the council with their housing. Farmers used the white rhino's habitat for their farm land and other parts of their habitat are being used for settlements such as housing.

Why are southern white rhino's gray?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Rhinos are gray and not purple because a lot of light is being absorbed by the skin, and only some is being reflected back towards our eyes, making the rhino look gray. It also has to do with skin pigmentation. It is just the type of pigmentation found in all rhinos. Rhinos could be purple if their skin pigmentation changed to be that way, but it didn't, so rhinos are gray.

Why does the white rhino need protecting?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

People hunt them for their horn, which is thought in many places to have medicinal properties. although this is not true, they are still killed because a horn can be sold for a lot of money to people that still think it works. The feet are sometimes hollowed out, dried, and used as "decorative waste baskets" and the tail is chopped off and used as a fly swatter and sold to tourists or locals. the rest of the body will all go to waste and rot.

What are white rhinos feeding habits?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

White rhinos are herbivores but that probably doesn't help much since a lot of animals are also herbivores; they eat short grass (about 20 inches). Mainly, they eat a grass called panicum but they eat other grasses such as pennisetum, urochloa, and digiteria. They will carefully avoid unpalatable grasses. The food that they eat is low in energy, so they eat for long periods of the day. A rhino will eat between 27-37 lb. (60-80 kg) a day and will spend about 50% of its daylight hours feeding. Sometimes they are seen eating soil, particularly around termite mounds where they obtain certain minerals not otherwise available to them.

Can a hippo kill a rhino?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It could be an even match-up between these two animals. Both hippos and rhinos have thick skin, and a hippo's jaws are powerful enough to cause a bit of damage to a rhino's hide. And yet a rhino has a horn that is sharp enough to gore the hippo. So it's possible that it could be a draw between these animals.
