You can live without it. Subwoofers are bass speakers. Normal speakers have bass elements but are not as "chest rattling" as a subwoofer.

Why do I get 'Can't Sign into Messenger' when signing into Xbox Live?
If you get this, it still means you are signed into Xbox Live itself, where you can still send messages to other users, play online, and use other Xbox Live features.
However, Xbox Live is part of MSN (Microsoft Network, now called "Live"), which has a messaging service, in which you can link the two IDs together, so you can chat on MSN through Xbox Live. Because of this, if you don't have a MSN account linked, or the information isn't correct, it will give you an error.
Once you login to Xbox Live, it will login automatically. To disable this:
- Sign into Xbox Live
- In the Xbox Dashboard, select your gamer profile.
- Go to "Auto Sign-in"
- Under the "Windows Live Messenger", choose Disable.
With the new Xbox Update to disable messenger auto-sign in:
1)Sign into xbox live.
2)In the xbox dashboard scroll to settings.
3)Select Profile.
4)Select Sign in preferences.
5)Under messenger sign in, choose disable.

Yep, just pull out the ethernet cable (or wireless adaptor if you have it) out of your xbox and a message will pop up saying: "Disconnected from Xbox Live".
If you're just trying to get away from your friends, you can remain on Live, but appear offline. You can do this by pushing the Xbox Guide button, then moving across to the furthest tab on the right. Then select Preferences from there, then "Xbox Live Status". Select the option "Appear Offline" and hey presto! Your annoying friends will think you are gone, when actually you're still racking up kills on MW2!! :)

OK, well you were half right in your question. In order to play on XBox live you will need either the wireless network adapter or run an Ethernet cable from your 360 to your home router. Simply having the hard drive will not allow you to play on XBox live.
