How long would it take to sail from Houston Texas to Cancun Mexico in a 35-foot yacht?
A sail craft's hull speed, its maximum theoretical speed, can be calculated by multiplying the square root of the length of waterline (LWL) by 1.34. If your boat is 35 feet long from stem to stern, the LWL will be less than that. So, if we assume the LWL to be 30 feet, the boat's hull speed is, therefore, 7.34 knots. The distance from Houston to Cancun is about 688 nautical miles, as the crow flies, so if you manage to sail the entire distance at hull speed, it will take you 94 hours to make the trip. But it's not realistic to assume that. You may encounter light winds that prevent you from sailing as fast as you might. Tacking and course corrections add miles. If you manage five knots, you might make it in 140 hours. And it might be safer -- and far more interesting -- to hug the Gulf coast and port hop all the way down, which will add considerable distance to the trip.

Do you need a sail number on a yacht?
No, but if you intend to race or compete in competitions then you do need a number.
Some people buy yachts either to show off their wealth or because they have nothing else to spend their money on. But many buy a yacht to enjoy the craft. There are things that can be done on a yacht and things that a yacht can do that are unique. There is an attraction to yachts, a lifestyle, that some find irresistible. And there is always the thrill of being out on the water under the press of sail to lift the spirits of a yachtsman.
There are many opportunities to experience the thrill of sailing even for the non-boat owner. There are cruises on yachts, there is yacht rental, and there are even clubs that offer "rides" to curious individuals so that the enjoyment of the sport can be shared. Certainly the yacht can be a large vessel with appointments that rival those of a house on land, but anyone who does a bit of reading about, or, better yet, looking at yachts will develop a better understanding as to why someone would want to buy one.

Who owns the yacht Braveheart?
It's difficult to track down the owner of a yacht without knowing which port they are out of. There could be literally hundreds of yachts named Braveheart. If you can determine which port they are registered in (usually listed below the name of the boat), you can check records in that county and/or state. Good luck. I used to work onboard one of the yachts around named 'Braveheart' . Her owners were movie director Burt Sugarman and Mary Hart host of Entertainment Tonight. Mel Gibson has no connection to ANY yacht named 'Braveheart'

On sailing vessels ropes are called sheets. The rope that is used to control the main sail, for example, is known as the main sheet. Ropes that control the jib sail are known as jib sheets, etc. The expression "three sheets to the wind" to describe someone who is inebriated, comes from the fact that if three of the ropes that control sails were loose and "to the wind" the vessel would be out of control.
