Britain's first Speedway meeting was held in Droylsden, Manchester on 25 June 1927.
It didn't take long after the invention of the bicycle for people to begin racing them. An soon after that, people started modifying the bikes to become better racing material. So there's no single inventot of the racing bike.
I don't want to offend you, but without spending any money the speed will (on a stright line black-top road be all you get), on a course with turns, (flat, bumpy, dirt, black-top) it all lands in your lap. it depend on how you enter, how late you brake, roll thru or square-off, how fast your back in the gas. Stright lines means speed, curves or turns scrubs off speed and slows you down, so the later you brake, and the faster your on the gas leaving the turn the longer you make the strights, also to square-off a corner you drive deep, pivot, and apply full throttle out of the corner which gives you a longer stright and a longer time under full throttle. Good-Luck!
Throughout history, racing has been about cheating. In the highest circles where tech inspections are strict cheating is less fluent - IRL, F1, etc. - but it still takes place.
However, we aren't talking about the highest circles, we are talking about circle track which is all about cheating and getting away with it - if you aren't cheating you aren't going to win or even finish mid pack.
Here are the most popular cheats:
- Make aftermarkt parts look stock
- Tire size matters. Purchasing wider tires and rebadging them as a smaller size, running a shorter/taller tire/rim for gearing reasons, etc.
- Brake bias, in classes that do not allow brake proportioning valves. Stock, 70% of your braking force is on the front tires which just causes the nose of the car to push on a dirt track. *Partially* blocking the front brake lines with a BB will help this. Running a stock brake proportioning valve from a 4 wheel disc brake car on the same chassis car equipped with rear drums will bias braking toward the rear. Cutting away part of the front brake pad so there is less braking force on the front wheels also works.
- Check out Davis Technologies traction control. Pricey, but proven.
- Corner weighting. You can do really crazy things like moving engine position in classes where shock/spring tuning is allowed.
- Revalving shocks in classes that do not allow suspension modifications. A lot of the OE shocks can be cut open and re-valved if you are crafty.
- Torque converters. Check out TCI's "stock appearing direct drive" torque converter, it's a light weight fluidless unit that fits inside a stock converter's housing. They were made EXPRESSLY for circle track cheating. Less drivetrain loss = more power to the ground.
- Lightweight rotating assembly ($$$), primarily crankshaft/flywheel/torque converter.
- Pertronix makes some Ford and GM ignition modules that charge the coil with a higher voltage to increase spark intensity. Most modern vehicles don't need ignition system upgrades, but if you're still fooling around with pre-90s iron it's a good idea.
- Mix your gas with 20-25% nitropropane. It's undetectable unlike other solutions.
Hope this helps!
"I'm going to sit here and lie to you - I'd never cheat" - Robert Yates
"I always told my guys, 'Cheat neat and you'll get by with a bunch of stuff.' I don't particularly tell my guys to cheat. I just tell them not to get caught." - Richard Petty
"There's a difference in cheating and creating. I was creating." - Junior Johnson
"Over half the 1970 NASCAR rulebook was dedicated to me" - Smokey Yunick
"I know they are cheating because I am cheating and they're beating me." - Richard Petty
I will admit the trx450r has a little more power but the ltr450 is way more ballanced than the Honda. They both have a lot of after market parts to help out with power and ballance so really i think it is a close call. But i think the Honda is better for the trail and the suzuki is better for the track.
I will admit that the ltr will kills the trx in all ways. the power difference is huge ltr is way better in that aspect
When a rider finishes in a point scoring position behind his team mate he gets an extra paid point ( speedway riders get paid by the points scored). This is not counted in the team score but was introduced to encourage team riding. A paid maximum means that a rider has been unbeaten by a rider from the opposing team, having finished second to his own team mate in one or more races.
My personal favorite is by Cindy Lou who sings a song called, "Dirt Track Racing" on her album Winning Heart. You can listen to it on her Myspace page
There are other artists that sing about dirt tracks like, "Dirt Track Cowboy" by Adam Brand, "Life is like a dirt track" by Lapskin and "Dirt Track Date" by Southern Culture on the Skids.
it makes it easy for judges and marshals to see know the horsepower so the know which category it should race in
75mph stock, if its race tuned, high 80s if your giving it some 2) Mine is stock, I weigh 150 pounds and it runs 88-92mph depending on the weather...most yfz450s run 85-90mph but some aren't tuned as good out of the factory as others...stock the slowest probally is around 70-75...so they range from 70-90mph but on average I would say 85mph
I have ran my 700xx against a 2008 raptor 700r SE both being stock My 700xx was about the same on level ground in accel. But starting on hills taking off the Raptor did pull me a little it also was a little more adgile(raptor). We were pretty even (level ground) until I hit fith gear then I pulled the 700r Its top end was at least 10 -15 mph slower. Dealer told me the 700xx would go 84mph stock.
There is no 450 Raptor, it is either a Raptor 250, 350, 660 or 700. If it is a 450 then it is a YFZ.

If something else is wrong. My chain slipped and went through the crank case and destroyed the engine. But it was old. I've heard of this happening on other Yamaha's, so maybe their timing chains need to be replace sooner. not sure
You are limited to the years between 1993 and 97, kind of. KTM was a mess back then and the bikes and parts were a reflection of that. Check out KTMTalk.com there is more info on KTM's there than one person could ever use in his life time.
A baton. It usually is a colored cylinder.
