What are the the weaknesses of the developmental approach in psychology?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Many approaches centre on the progression from birth to adulthood in development, but the challenge lies in the fluid and subjective nature of this process, particularly in defining maturity. Biological factors, including physical features like beards and breasts, contribute to varying perceptions of maturity. Genetic makeup can lead to premature hair loss in young individuals, creating discrepancies between appearance and actual maturity. Additionally, intellectual ability (IQ) adds complexity, with instances of high IQ in young children and low IQ in older individuals challenging conventional expectations. Consequently, developmental psychology's focus on constructs like maturity and IQ is debatable and introduces weaknesses to the field. check the channel by Dr T, called Life in its fullness on youtube for more information about this.

What are the wages for a psychologist?

User Avatar

Asked by Krazieasschick

It all depends on how good he/she is. A good one can charge quite a bit per hour and see 8 to 12 customers per day, depending on how much time he/she wants to put in. $100.00 to $200.00 per hour isn't heard of if his/her customers believe he/she is worth it. Recognize that psychologists who work for themselves are subject to market forces and can only charge what people are willing to pay. If people don't think you're worth it and you end up being counselor to the homeless, you won't get much. If you end up being psychotherapist to the stars you can retire with one customer. On the other hand, if he/she ends up being a counselor at a prison or youth correctional facility, he/she will just get state pay scale which won't be that great to start.

What is the difference clinical psychologist and counseling psychologists?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

oth counseling and clinical psychologists compete for the same APA approved internship sites.

Both get the same license (i.e. psychologist).

Both take largely the same coursework.

Both complete dissertations.

There is research involved in both types of programs (i.e., clinical and counseling psychology). Experimental psychology, however, is heavily focused on research (much more so than either clinical or counseling programs).

If you're interested in foregoing the majority of the research portion, you will want to consider a Psy.D. (doctorate in professional psychology). It is more heavily focused on applied psych.

What is the result of the Oedipus complex?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A connection with the mother figure and a disconnection with the father figure is what the Oedipus syndrome is.

Specifically, the term refers to a stage in male development that tends to occur between the ages of 3 and 6. During those years, the mother figure is the prime information source for the young male. After those years, the young male increasingly finds the father figure to be the primary role model for adult happiness and success.

Gas light them like haters do. Doing this to someone really isn't right at all. The definition is to manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity. This happens in Domestic violence situations when the abuser tries to control a victim by twisting their sense of reality. Its happened to me by someone I considered a friend, don't be like this to any one its not cool.

Does ADHD exist in women?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Many girls and women with ADD/ADHD are often undiagnosed because their symptoms look different from those in boys or men. Many girls or women may not appear hyperactive. Girls are usually less rebellious, less defiant and generally considered less difficult than boys. Boys who are hyperactive and disorganized are easier to spot and more likely to be referred for an evaluation.

There are several personality types of girls in which ADHD could be a factor. For example, there are girls who are shy and withdrawn, but disorganized. There are girls who are "tomboys," who are drawn to risky activities. They may be cooperative at school and work hard to please parents and teachers, but are often disorganized and messy. There are "daydreamers" or girls who seem to listen to teachers in class, but be in another world. They may find their minds wandering, are forgetful and disorganized. They become very anxious, depressed, worried and overwhelmed when schoolwork is due. They often are thought to be less bright than they actually are. "Chatty" girls also have high activity levels, and are very talkative and emotional, but can be forgetful and disorganized. Highly intelligent girls, with above average IQs, who have increasing problems with concentration and organization as their school life becomes more demanding also may have ADHD.

Women with ADHD who complain of feeling overwhelmed and disorganized tend to be diagnosed more often with depression. These women often feel a powerful sense of shame and inadequacy. They oftentimes need to spend all of their waking energy just fighting their natural tendency to be disorganized. Sometimes, ADHD does not become a problem until a woman has a baby or a second baby, when she is expected to be highly organized, accomplishing multiple roles under a lot of strain as both a caregiver and, in many cases, a career woman.

In addition to the above, lots of popular media in our culture, like women's magazines often have articles about how women are supposed to be multi-taskers, and how all women have trouble keeping up with kids, home, work, etc. You see it in movies and TV shows, too.

This can prolong denial, and make it harder for women to get diagnosed.

How does a narcissist get diagnosed with narcissist personality disorder?

User Avatar

Asked by Nex

Answer

Only a licensed psychiatrist can diagnose an individual with Narcissist Personality Disorder, or NPD. Individuals with NPD rarely seek psychiatric help (that's part of the disorder: "I'm OK and you're crazy, why should I seek help?") so usually it's a spouse or family member that exposes the behavior. Individuals suspected of having NPD must have a certain number of traits or characteristics common to the disorder. Recognizing these traits is what a psychiatrist is trained to do. An individual can have multiple symptoms of NPD and still not get a diagnosis of NPD.

What is the difference between a mentally insane person and a psychotic person?

User Avatar

Asked by Ditzygirl

The word "crazy" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as the word "insane" does, in that sometimes people joke around and call each other crazy when they mean it to have a more humorous connotation.

Insane could be used in this way as well.

But usually the word insane just means out of touch with sanity, which is most closely defined with psychotic, or having a break from reality.

Therefore, it is debatable as to if there even really is a difference. It really depends on what is meant when either word is being used.

Remember that most every word has both a connotative and a denotative meaning.

Some words are meant to be taken more literally than others.

Can a adult have Oedipus complex?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I think, yes. There are some adults I know who still live with their mothers and it seems that they will never have a normal relationship (but of course living with the mother is not a criteria for that, as there are men who live alone but still not able to create a normal relationship).

I think these guys have such high expectations which can't be fulfilled by anyone because no one can compete with the only women in their lives who love and overprotect them (or used to do it when they were kids). In my view these mothers usually didn't have a good relationship with the sons' father and when these children were babies they gave all their love to them as a compensation of their failed relationship.

This complex need to be cured by a psychologist, although most of the men goes to a therapist if they have sexual problems (like impontency).

(I am not a therapist just read about the topic so any other view is welcome.)

A person who always boasting?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no specific word for that specific form of bragging. "Uxurious" can refer to a man excessively devoted to his wife.

"Braggart" is the general term for a man boasting of his own accomplishments.

Often times any person who excessively speaks of their children or grandchildren - for any reason - is called a "bore", as others usually do not care one way or another.

Someone who is proud of there son..

Why are there pedophiles?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because there are more white men. If you go to a African country there are more black men being pedophiles then white, and if you go to a Asian country etc. Pedophiles are people who are sexually attracted to young children, and it is estimated by Michael Seto that 5% of the adolescent and adult male population have pedophilia. It is unknown if white men truly make up the majority of this 5%.
