Why did nelson Mandela leave fort hare?

Actually, he left her and declared his marriage at an end in April 1992, because the problems in his private life threatened to derail his political credibility and ability to lead the ANC.

The bad publicity caused by her role in the violence in Soweto and the case of kidnapping and assults of youths - namely Stompie Seipei and the disapperance of Lolo Sono. Even though she was aquitted of assault, she was found guilty of kidnapping. Ever since then there have been questions about her role in the assaults that occured in the back rooms of her home in Soweto.

She has unique power and position and is very influential.

All events prior to the break-up, reflected badly on Mandela and people started to feel he was 'covering' for her, one of the reasons for this 'feeling'- in August 1990, she was appointed head of the Welfare Department of the ANC, in charge of repatriating exiles. Welfare NGO's petitioned the ANC against her appointment. Even the ANC National Executive Committee tried to remove her, but Mandela blocked theses attempts personally. In 1991 he went to her trial and conviction for kidnapping, then in 1992 she was accused of misappropriating funds from her department. Public scandal was accompanied by personal scandal.

Once Mandela declared his marriage at an end, she resigned all her positions in the ANC.

More disgrace followed and she was barely out of the headlines.

In August 1994, Mandela announced he was divorcing her.

Even so, we have not seen or heard the last of her as a powerful political force in S.A.

Yun Ha Gi's answer :

In one protest against apartheid Mandela publicly burnt his 'pass'. (These passes had to be carried by all black men and they were not allowed to leave their own district without a pass. )

In 1952, the ANC began preparation for a joint Defiance Campaign against apartheid with Indian and communist groups, founding a National Voluntary Board to recruit volunteers. Deciding on a path of nonviolent resistanceinfluenced by Mohandas Gandhi.

"Demonstrations in support of the Defiance Principles were organised for 6 April 1952, the 300th anniversary of white settlement in the Cape of Southern Africa.

Of approximately 10,000 people who protested the apartheid laws, around 8,500 of them were imprisoned, including Nelson Mandela."

Mandela took part in the unsuccessful protest to prevent the demolition of the all-black Sophiatown suburb of Johannesburg in February 1955. The events led Mandela to believe that the ANC "had no alternative to armed and violentresistance".

Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South African Communist Party he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961.

On 11 January 1962 using the adopted name David Motsamayi, Nelson Mandela left South Africa secretly. He travelled around Africa and visited England to gain support for the armed struggle. He received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia and returned to South Africa in July 1962.

Leading a bombing campaign against government targets. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.

Facing the death penalty his words to the court at the end of his famous 'Speech from the Dock' on 20 April 1964 became immortalized:

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
