Although it was criticized on both sides, the Missouri Compromise served to bring some lessening of tensions between northern and southern sectionalism. Three portions of the document were that Massachusetts and Maine would separate, and Maine would be admitted as a free state. Missouri would enter the country as a slave state. Anything above the 36 30 latitude, would be a free state.

The three main points of the Comprise of 1850 were; 1.California as a free state including Southern California 2.Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory with slavery to be decided by popular sovereignty. 3.The slave trade was abolished in Washington, DC (but not slavery itself), and the Fugitive Slave Act was strengthened.
