Games: GameShark
  • Release Date: 1997
  • Genre: Data Management
  • Style: Game Enhancer

Accessory Description

The GameShark stores codes that add special features and "cheats" when used with supported games. Codes may "unlock" hidden characters and areas or enable features like character invicibility or unlimited ammunition. The device comes preprogrammed with several codes for popular games and also supports an interface through which users can enter codes for newly released games. New codes are regularly added at the GameShark homepage, {/http://www.gameshark.com/}. This model of the GameShark from {@Interact Accessories} plugs into the I/O Parallel port located on the back right corner of the original model of the {!PlayStation} console. This version of the GameShark device is not compatible with the "PSOne" model of the {!PlayStation}, which does not feature a Parallel port. It should be noted that even before {@Sony} released the totally redesigned "PSOne" model of the {!PlayStation} console, some later models of the original {!PlayStation} design were also manufactured without the I/O Parallel port, so it is important to know which version of the system will be used when considering compatible GameShark accessories.

Brand history

GameShark Pro V3.3 for the N64

Currently, the GameShark name is owned by Mad Catz, and the devices only exist to back-up and restore game saves.

Fall of InterAct

While the Game Boy device was first released, InterAct acquired the rights to sell Datel's Action Replay and Pro Action Replay devices in North America; these devices were sold under the GameShark and GameShark Pro names. InterAct released GameShark devices for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Saturn, Dreamcast and Nintendo 64. After InterAct's parent company, Recoton, went bankrupt, the rights to the GameShark name were acquired by MadCatz, who relinquished the North American Action Replay distribution rights. Following this, MadCatz sold game save devices under the GameShark name instead of the traditional cheat device, and Datel marketed the Action Replay in North America directly.

All platforms

GameShark is not available for the Xbox 360 because it is prohibited by Microsoft's licensing.[1]
