John Brown raided the town of Harper's Ferry, Virginia with 20 other men, including a number of his sons on October 16, 1859. His plan was to capture the Federal arsenal in the town and start a massive slave uprising in the south, but this never happened. A group of 100 US marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee stormed the building the next day and killed or captured all his men. He was hanged on December 2, 1859.

∙ 14y agoJohn Brown tried to get all the slaves in the south to fight against the government with him. He was a little bit crazy((mentally sick))and didn't tell any of the slaves and expected them to know, so when he showed up there was nobody there but he of course told his friends who probably told the government and they were there waiting for him. Robert E. Lee was actually one of the people to arrest him.

∙ 10y agoOn October 16, 1859 John Brown and a small band of followers used force to take control of a Federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry Virginia. His intent was to try to start a slave rebellion with the guns in the arsenal. He sent out a patrol to recruit slaves to the rebellion. They found no recruits but did take several Virginians as hostages. Townspeople and the local militia surrounded Brown. Two Virginians were killed in the gun fight. Col. Robert E. Lee of the US Marines captured Brown. The actual charge was treason and Brown was hanged on Dec. 1, 1859.
The Governor of Virginia, Henry A. Wise charged Brown with treason. The charge was incorrect as Brown owed no allegiance to Virginia. Nevertheless Brown was tried and found guilty. He was hanged on December 1, 1859.
Brown could have been charged with:
A. Treason against the United States for using armed force to take control of the armory;
B. Kidnapping;
C. Murder
The treason against Virginia charge seemed out of place. Brown declined to have an attorney. Either way, John Brown had committed capital offences and would have been executed under any of the other possible charges.
