Britain is at the same latitude as Labrador, yet is much warmer. The reason for this is that a current called the "Gulf Stream" carries water from the Caribbean across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, then to Greenland and back to the Caribbean.

Britain is one of the few places where general circulation models predict a very weak warming or even slight cooling. This is due to an influx of fresh water from the northerly flowing Gulf Stream, which comes from a combination of enhanced melting from Greenland, an increased flux of meltwater from sea ice, and increased precipitation. While most scientists don't believe that the meridional overturning circulation will completely shut off and isolate the Gulf Stream, any weakening would reduce the amount of warm water and its climate-moderating influences to Western Europe.

the gulf stream brings heat up to from the Gulf of Mexico to the northern Atlantic where it gives of its energy and cools. As it cools it becomes denser due to increased salinity and the cooling and sinks to the bottom of the Atlantic and flows southward. This is called Thermohaline circulation, part of the "great conveyer belt" of the oceans flow.

Quite a lot.

we are on the same latitude as New York, and yet get noticeably more temperate more mild weather conditions, especially near Ireland. this is due to a Current of warm water often referred to as the 'gulf stream' which originates from the gulf of Mexico

salt water is able to retain heat for longer amounts of time than less salty water. with global warming, and the melting of land based ice caps, the current will become more and more diluted, until it has the same water potential salinity as the surrounding ocean. The gulf stream will stop. And Britain will have abrupt and dramatic changes to its weather system This could lead to increased droughts during summer and excess water during winter as warm and cold fronts are not met with any opposing force.

this will damage farmers crops, pushing food prices up. Also the nutrients brought to England's coast by the gulf stream will not be able to arrive any longer. fish stocks will plummet with no food, and our marine biodiversity will crash. again, prices in fish will sharply increase.

Britain itself will get warmer, and our climate will get steadily more wet through most of the year. Tourist trade will decrease in many areas such as Cornwall as weather conditions become more akin to ones expected in the lake district and further north.

Norfolk will drown- rising sea levels mean approximately 5% of the land mass may disappear within the next 20 years. the CBA of making seawalls will not be viable for a government swamped in dept, and much of major cities and towns will be swallowed in water, increasing the population density of people elsewhere in the country, and costing billions in insurance. Driving us deeper into dept. London's CBD will also be threatened with rising sea levels and the houses of Parliament could be under 1m of water within the next half century

the Rain will decrease pollination as insects tend to not fly during heavy rain. decreased pollination means less flowers and less food for bees and other insects. trees and other plants will not be able to reproduce, easily, taking away vital habitats for birds and thousands of different insects .

while the government try to deal with this, they will raise taxes in almost everything, especialy anything to do with non environmentally friendly actions, as by then, they may of realised something was happening. but of course, they will throw too much money at a cause they got around to taking seriously too late.

there are more effects I'm sure, but my bum hurts from sitting, and I'm tired. Google it, I'm sure things will come up, these are ones that, as a geography student, i have been taught, and as an artist, have already observed. i hope you find this helps.

It's not possible to say accurately what will happen to Scotland in the future. There is the strong possibility that the warming Gulf Stream will slow or stop bringing warm water to Western Europe. If this happens then Scotland's temperatures may drop to be more like Canada's, which is at the same latitude.

Global warming is happening all over the world. Some places will be drier than before. Other places will be wetter than before. Warming causes weather, so more warming is certainly going to affect the weather.

Low lying countries and Coastlines and cities will be in danger from rising sea levels. Warming oceans expand, and this is causing the rise firstly. Melting glaciers and ice caps are a secondary reason.

Places too cold for agriculture may be able to be farmed, but much of the present croplands may have to adapt or be abandoned if global warming continues.

it might cause the uk's weather to change dramatically and make it warmer

Slowing or stopping of th Gulf Stream might make Britain colder, at first.

Global warming effects the UK in many ways.

e.g.

  • low-lying coasts will get flooded with the quickly rising sea
  • storms and floods will become more freaquent
  • it will get way too hot and dry for crops to grow in some places

Global warming means the heating up of the earth which means warmer weather. But don't get too excited because warmer weather = ice caps melting which means oceanic levels risewhich equals more evaporation which means more rain in the UK. :(

It would affect it by flooding quite an amount of it, thanks to melting ice caps

What are the causes of global warming in the UK?

Pretty much the same as global causes of global warming--the emission of carbon dioxide from the generation of electricity and consumption of fossil fuels in transportation. The UK is responsible for about 1.7% of mankind's CO2 emissions. Since the UK is only 0.9% of earth's human population, they're actually doing pretty good, though we all yet have room for improvement.

Will global warming make the UK a nicer place?

I don't think so, UK is rated as the top 7 emitter of the world's top carbon polluter the only thing that can make it nice is by contributing an act to stop global warming as well as other countries since UK has been signed up to Kyoto protocol since 1995

What is the name of the ocean current that affects the weather in the UK?

Gulf Stream - the sinking of supercooled water in the Greenland Sea. It warms the UK by a good 5 to 8 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, it seems to be weakening due to Global Warming.

How is the UK damaging Antarctica's environment?

Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), as the UK does in transport, industry and the generation of electricity, releases age-old carbon dioxide which is causing global warming. This is melting the ice caps and glaciers of Antarctica, particularly in the West Antarctic Peninsula.

What is global cooling?

There was a slight cooling around the middle of the 20th Century caused by the amount of pollution particles in the air. These were reflecting the sun's rays. When Clean Air Acts began to take effect around the world the air became cleaner and the cooling disappeared.

Would the UK benefit from global warming?

no.the global warming won't benefit anyone

What will happen to the UK's agriculture if global warming continues?

We don't know. Global warming may cause the Gulf Stream, which keeps the UK warm, to slow or stop. This would make Britain colder than it is now. However, if global warming continues Britain will then become warmer and warmer. There may be more rain or less rain. All this will cause problems for farmers and agriculture.

How might someone in Scotland welcome global warming?

A Scot might think that two or three degrees of warming might be welcome, but actually one possible climate change might be the cooling or ending of the Gulf Stream that brings warm water to the UK from the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Stream keeps Britain much warmer than similar latitudes in Canada, for example. Scotland might be in for an extended cold spell.

What will the weather be like for winter 2011-2012 in the uk?

Can't tell yet... Probably more extreme than the "average" winter for the last century due to global warming).

Why should the UK try to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases?

(Another contributor wrote:)If we choose to do what we can to reduce greenhouse gases, we can help prevent global warming. Global warming is predicted to cause potentially catastrophic climate change, rising sea levels, loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and serious economic harm in the medium and long term.

Why does it not snow much in the UK?

Global warming ! Winters are much warmer now than they used to be (I'm old enough to remember a foot of snow falling in a single night as a child !)

Why is global warming nothing?

global warming is definetly something and is not nothing. it is a very real threat and one that affects everyone from the queen of the UK to the president of the USA to the poorest child in Africa. we all live here so all need to do something, try changing your luightbubls to energy efficient ones or recyling more. together we can fight climate change!
