The only parts of Europe conquered by the Islamic Empires, also known as Caliphates, were much of modern Spain, all of modern Portugal and Cyprus, and much of what is now the region of Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. The Caliphate known today as the Rashidun Caliphate also conquered much of eastern Turkey and the Southern Caucasus.

Spain was invaded by Muslims in 711 and they overran the entire peninsula, taking what are now Spain and Portugal in a couple years. They then invaded southern France, and established control over extensive areas before being defeated by Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours in 732. Following that, Muslims were gradually pushed out of Western Europe for the remainder of the Middle Ages, until the fall of Cordoba in 1492.

Sicily was invaded by Muslim raiders repeatedly, beginning in the 7th century. They conquered the island in 902, and remained in control until they were driven out by Normans in 1091. There were a number of Muslim raids into Italy, with the establishment of short lived Muslim territories. The Muslims sacked Rome in 846.

The Balkans were invaded by Ottoman Turks, who finally destroyed the Byzantine Empire in 1453. They took all of Greece, Bulgaria and the rest of the Balkans. They also conquered Romania, Hungary, and much of southern Russia along the Black Sea. Most of their conquests were after the Middle Ages ended, however.
