To find out what life was like in England in the 1600s, read "Samuel Pepys Diary" which was written over an almost 9 year period in the 1600s. He experienced first hand the first stage production of "Romeo and Juliet", witnessed the Great Fire of London, the impalement of Cromwell's head, the Bubonic Plague which swept Europe, and other major events. Most fascinating, though, is his account of everyday life and the social mores of his day. Pepys wrote in a code and never intended anyone else to read his journals. The journals were kept for centuries until they were given to someone to decode. Fascinating!

During the period of time between 1400 and 1600 AD, England spent most of the time in the middle of a war. Shakespeare wrote more than 35 plays, and the Tudor family is trying to take over. The Church of England is formed and the country enjoys better than ever trade throughout Europe.

Life in the 1500s depended on a great deal of hard work. Water had to be carried everywhere. You made your own bread. Walking was the only way to get about. At night it was dark unless you saved fat for candles. In winter it was cold unless you collected firewood. You washed your clothes in a stream. People were worn out in their 30s and rarely survived into their 50s. However if you lived in a town it was better. There were doctors, pharmacists and shops. In general people moved to the towns to escape the hard labour required to live in the countryside. To trade you had to become an apprentice first for a number of years. Every Michaelmas (September) there were great fairs for everyone who wanted to become a servant. A servant's life was desirable because you shared in the higher living standard of your rich master or mistress. Your behaviour was controlled by the Sheriff who enforced the laws of England and the church which ruled on matters of marriage, birth and death. People who left their jobs could be arrested and returned to their employer. If you were very poor you got welfare, but only if you belonged to a community. Vagrants ie people who wandered from place to place were arrested and whipped. If your parents were wealthy landowners you had servants and no need to work. For the rest the only way to escape from poverty was to become a lawyer, doctor or successful trader. To make life bearable people indulged in dancing, music and drinking. Picture books and other books were available including history, geography and fiction. In the cities one might see a theatre performance or organised fights between dogs and bulls. The 1500s were peaceful compared to the 1400s and 1600s but much stress due to the change of religion to Protestantism from Roman Catholicism and increasing poverty led to the Revolution in the 1600s. The century began under Henry VII, almost a medieval king, and ended with his granddaughter Elizabeth I who was familiar with India, China and America.

Things were dirty and so were people because they believed that bathing was bad so they bathed only few times a year. Also medical knowledge was not very good. Sometimes when people had sicknesses someone would "Bleed" them meaning that they would cut their wrist and let their blood drip out of the wound. They believed that this would relieve them of the sickness in them. Also, some people were treated poorly (lower class) and some people were treated with respect (upper class). As usual the upper class is the minority. Also before 1215 A.D. when King John ruled England, he would take money and land from everyone, even the poor. In 1215 this was put to an end when King John was cornered and forced to sign the Magna Carta which stopped King John from stealing and it gave more rights to the people. Another thing in medieval times is that there was not much of a sewage system and people would just dump their garbage on the side of the road. This is mainly what it was like in medieval times

Horrible for most people, bad for others. Little to no hygiene and disease ran rampant. Not to mention the abismal political situation for all but the king and his nobles.

Life in 1500s England was very difficult for most people. There was a huge divide between the rich and the very poor. Most people were either nomadic, poor farmers, or servants of some type.
