Open the hood. As you face the car, the airbox will be on your left side. You need to remove a small cover over it by gently pulling up on it. Then remove the air inlet tube on the front by gently pulling it off. Remove the heat shield. It is held on by two Phillips screws, and it is very tight so have a very very short screwdriver with a very sharp and good condition tip on hand. You will probably scrape your knuckles, this part is the reason i usually have it done by somebody else when it is in for other service. Under the heat shield there are two clips holding the top of the air box down. Use a flat screwdriver to pry they open. Unhook the vacuumm hoses from the top of the airbox so you can move it around, I usually have to disconnect the 90 degree hose in the corner but mine is a 2003 and there may be a minor variation in the hoses. Pull the cover up a few inches, grab the air filter and pull it out. This is a good time to vacuum out and wipe down the inside of the airbox. Also a very good time to remove, clean, and dry the pre-filter (some people call it the slush screen). It is fastened to the inside of the airbox with a single Phillips head screw; you can probably leave it out if you are so inclined, mine has been out since 2003 without any problems and lots of winter driving in MI and CO. Carefully push the new air filter through the gap between the box and the cover, and push the foam seal down all the way around. Place the cover on top of the foam seal, make sure it is lined up all the way around, and snap the two retainers back into place. It is helpful to use a flat screw-driver to push the retainers into place as you use your bodyweight to push the cover down because it is a pretty tight seal. Replace the hoses, heatshield, inlet hose, and cover. Put your tools away and you are done.
