In short: it was overthrown in a 1689 rebellion because its government did unpopular things. If you need more details, here they are!

  • Governor Sir Edmund Andros infuriated Puritans in Massachusetts. He favored Anglicans and enforced the Navigation Acts. These laws were unpopular among many locals.
  • Andros and his officials interfered with town meetings.
  • The colonies' original charters expired when the dominion was formed. The people preferred these older charters.

Finally, on April 18 1689, colonial militia entered Boston. They were joined by mobs in the street. Twenty-four were arrested by this mob, including Governor Andros, his top officials, and a handful of prominent Anglicans. The captain of a royal navy frigate was also taken into custody.

A majority of Andros's Council sided with the rebels and formed a new government. Ex-governor Simon Bradstreet was given control of Massachusetts and, for a while, New Hampshire.

Andros was sent home to England for trial; charges were dropped and he was acquitted.

The old colonial governments in New England were renewed.

New England, being the colonies of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire were ruled by the English King and Parliament until the War of Independence resulted in their becoming independent, along with the other original 13 colonies/states.

Prior to independence, they all had Royal Governors and also had various forms of semi-democratic self-government at the local and even colonial level.
