I think it is because it is easy to learn it and many british and Americans set sail to other countries and helped them in improving their country, agriculture and etc.

ANSWER

At the height of British power, it was literally true that the sun never set on their Empire - they had significant holdings in places all over the world and on every continent. Furthermore, they were a major mercantile nation, and English traders could be found almost anywhere. English was a highly useful language to learn for this reason.

As American power eclipsed that of Great Britain, people didn't have to learn a new language to deal with the new power - Americans spoke English, too. So English's position became more entrenched.

English is a language of international communication. It is used in many swears of life e.g. all the messages at the air ports are in English. English is used in tourism, trade (handel), technology. All the newest things within technology is printed in English. So it's very useful to speak English. It is spoken by a lot of people in the world. It's one of official languages in United Nation and European Union. It's easy to communicate English everywhere. It's not a very difficult language. All computers languages and programmes are closely connected with English. A lot of information in the internet is also written in English.

Largely because of the British Empire. At it's peak in the late 19th & early 20th Centuries, the Empire was the largest the world has ever seen, covering no less than a third of the entire land mass of the planet. Some of these nations were built up from being settled by the British, others had been conquered and were under colonial rule, but at all events, English was the official language of Government, so any non-English speaking natives of conquered countries had to learn the language to communicate with their new rulers. English is an easy language to learn, so a lot of them found it convenient to use in daily life, especially in places such as India where there are several regional languages such as Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and so on. People from one part of India may have found it hard to understand the language of folks from another part, but they could BOTH talk to each other in English!!

Also, the bulk of the early settlers in the USA came from England, and although many other nationalities came to settle there (French, Germans, Italians, Central Europeans and so on), as in the British Empire English was adopted as the official tongue. As American power grew during the 20th Century, and US influence and popular culture was exported abroad, the USA also served to expand the dominance of the language. American films, newspapers, books and advertisements were all in English, so foreign people found that they had to know at least some of the tongue to understand them. This was furthered by America's trans-global airline expansion from the 1930s onwards, so that English became the official global language of air traffic control.

However, it should be mentioned that French is also an international language, though not to the extent of English. This is due mainly to French colonial expansion- several African countries still use French as their official first language. Also, as many French settled in Canada as English or American people did. The French Canadian population were loath to give up their language (rather like the Welsh), so that Canada is now officially a bilingual nation.
