How did Lincoln treat the civil rights of dissenters during the Civil War?

Those dissenters who were in positions of power, ie congressmen, judges and the like were jailed without writ. Many were held but for a short period of time and let go, where they retired to their districts or went to Europe to sit the war out. Dissenters of lesser status were left to the mercies of local authorities. Some areas under Union control, specifically Baltimore Maryland and Louisville Kentucky were openly hostile to the Union war effort and were heavily garrisoned and from time to time put under martial law.

What is Equal Justice Under Law?

Equal Justice Under Law is the principle that government must treat all individuals and organizations equally, refraining from giving any legal support to discriminatory practices. Equal Justice Under Law requires that government never succumb to the temptation to reward unsuccessful businesses and individuals with special benefits or heap additional burdens on successful business, even if such interventions might make things more fair. Equal Justice Under Law requires equality of opportunity but not necessarily equality of outcome.

When were chimney sweeps abolished in the UK?

They are still done today, but in 1875 a new law was passed that allowed only registered people to undertake the work. Back in 1840 a lengthy law was passed making it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sweep chimneys, which put final end to the use of young chimney sweeps.

What are the types of martial law?

1. Full Martial Law is characterized by the presence of full combat ready troops in the streets of our city and towns. 2. Martial Law Jurisdiction. This form of Martial Law is what governs our service personnel. They are under the jurisdiction of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Under the UCMJ your rights are a privilege granted by the UCMJ and not protected by an appeal to the provisions of the Constitution for the united States. 3. Martial Law Rule. This aspect of Martial Law puts the civilian population under the exclusive direction of the Congress. Does anyone question the reason Congress uses the word "war" when singling out a perceived social ill. There are so many other adjectives that can be used why use the word war. Does not a declared war place the population under Martial Law? Does the declaration of war not put the entire country in a combat zone? Think about it.

Who suggested Martial Law should be used to end the government shutdown?

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat, Texas suggested martial law be used to end the government shutdown. However, it is not clear she used the term as most people understand it. She is quoted as saying, in explanation: "It's something called a continuing resolution, but it's a bill that you put on the floor that has been passed already by Republicans and Democrats in the United States Senate....that we could vote on today. "We have martial law -- what that means -- and my colleagues know what it means -- is that you can put a bill on in just minutes."
