Are you the original owner? If so, the owners manual will tell you in the maintenance schedule section. If this car is equipped with a V6, then 100,000 mi is probably the suggested interval to change the belt.
Normally timing chains will last 100 to 150,000 miles easily. Unlike a timing belt which gives no warning before breaking, a chain will get noisy or the engine will be hard to time. You usually receive advanced warning of immanent failure.
Each vehicle is different. Refer to the owners manual for that information. If you don't have an owners manual, the dealer can certainly help you with that.

I'm having that done now(98 S10). $380 to replace the chain. If they have to pull the oil pan to remove broken pieces, it will be $805. When they get it back together, they will do a compression test to see if any valves are bent. Don't know what it will cost to fix that.
