What are Greek columns like?

They were tall stone columns used to support buildings. They were used for support, so although the Greeks made every effort to make then appear to be straight, they were sometimes slightly tilted for best support. There were three main styles of Greek columns.

Doric columns: Tall simple columns. The had round tops and no bases. Decoration was a minimum, and usually consisted of fluted lines running lengthwise down the column, if there was any decoration at all.

Ionic columns: These were slighty dressier, and often had scrollwork at the top and or bottom of the column. Sometimes the entire column was carved out to be a statue of a god, goddess, or hero. When they were not carved into characters, they were more heavily fluted than the Doric columns.

Corinthean columns: These were very eleaberate and elegant columns. They were slender compared to the Doric and Ionic columns, and the detail work was more intricate and leafy. The tops and bases were heavily decorated. The Temple of Zues is noted for its use of this type of column.

What IB subjects do you need to become a Architect?

In high school, a good solid math background is a good idea: algebra, trig, calculus and physics. If your school offers a mechanical drawing course, this may be of interest. Also, take as many computer courses as you can. In college, you will have more math and physics plus courses instructural analysis, mechanical and electrical equipment, materials and methods of construction, environmental and sustainability analysis, architecture history and social context, plus business practice and management. Draw a lot to train your eye and spatial perception. Design studio knits all of this together into buildings. If the buildings are also beautiful - as they should be - they are called architecture. Including undergraduate studies, a typical architecture program directed toward a professional degree involves 5 to 6 years at a university, for a bachelor or master degree, respectively; PhD ... longer. Following graduation with a bachelors or masters degree in architecture, an internship of 3 years in a qualified architecture office is required, followed by successful passing of a state licensing exam to become licensed and registered as an architect. Only licensed and registered architects can use the title "architect" and practice architecture.

How does a lever make work easier?

It technically does not make work easier, you really do the same work. But if you meant force applied, you do apply a smaller force. Since you may apply the force further from the fulcrum (point of rotation) than the load is therefore the force required to lift the load is smaller. This is true because of torques which is force X distance from fulcrum, therefore to apply the same torque if you increase distance your force subsequently decreases.

Returning to the comment that work is constant, since you are applying a force further from the fulcrum, the distance you have to push is further; therefore, due to Work = Force X Distance, you still do the same work since even though your force decreased, distance had increased.

**********************

Although the lever does not change the work, it **does** make the work easier. You are more concerned with the force that you have to apply than with the mechanical work input and output, so you are expending less energy by applying less force. I think this is what you mean by "easier". If simple machines did not make life "easier", we would never have bothered to invent them!

Why are some apartment buildings call arms?

The best answer that I have heard relates to the "coat of arms" that are often used to signify a family etc in medieval times. Since many people in those days were illiterate a hotel, pub, boarding house, etc would display a picture i.e. "coat of arms" to identify itself rather than have a name on a sign. That establishment would then become know as the _____ Arms. This trend then carried over to lodging establishments in the US but over time the picture aspect became unnecessary however the word "Arms" stuck.

Hope this helps!
