Bats get a bad reputation in the movies (vampires). They are frequently carriers of rabies... or worse. Some live in great communities in tight, dark quarters (caves) that aren't suited for interaction with humans. They only venture forth from their caves in the first hours of evening darkness. They're not very sociable. The floors of their caves are frequently covered with a thick blanket of guano (bat feces). To add to the above, as a rule, many species are not very photogenic; they don't do closeups.

Is a bat a minibeast?

NO, bats are mammals.

· Bats use echolocation to catch prey

· send out high frequency sound waves to find objects in their path

· echolocation calls are ultrasonic - beyond human hearing range in most cases but there is the Spotted Bat (euderma maculatum) which uses lower frequency echolocation calls which can be heard by people

· Canada has 19 species of bats

· life span of over 30 years

· bats are mammals - warm-blooded, give birth to live young

· wings are folds of skin supported by elongated finger bones

· resting bad hang head downward - making it easy to take to flight at any given moment

· average sized Canadian bat - weighs 8 g, wing span of about 22 cm

· larges Canadian species weighs about 30 g, wing span of 40 cm

· smallest Canadian species weighs about 5 g

· bats are not blind - they can see very well

· bats are nocturnal creatures

· bats in Canada feed on insects - will consume 50-100 percent of their body weight in one night

Do ferrets use echolocation?

Not per se. Echo location requires the animal to emit high frequency sounds then tracking targets by the reflection of that sound. Dogs do not emit high frequency sounds, but do have acutely sensitive hearing, and are able to track by distinguishing the direction from which sound originates.

How do you repel bats?

I'm assuming that the bats are in a home or other undesirable location. The only EPA approved way to repel bats is with naphthalene (moth balls or crystals.) It will drive them away temporarily but they'll return when the crystals have evaporated. It will give you time to seal up any entry points, though.

Is a bat really a flying fox?

It is a microbat. It lives in Latin America. All megabats live in the Old World.

Why can a bat fly?

Acually bats do fly. They are the only mammals that can "fly", because things like sugargliders and gliding squirrels cannot create thrust by flapping their wings because technically they don't have any. Bats can gain altitude without wind by flapping. If you look at a bat's wing you will find it both resembles a human hand and a bird wing.

What is the difference between a bird and a bat?

The basic difference between bats and owls is that bats are mammals and owls are birds.

When do bats fly?

From what i know bats will swim if need be such as if they fall in or in to fruit from the surface of the water (or fish, perhaps) here's a link of an image of a bat maybe about to do just that:- http://images.Google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.geocities.com/radar_foxbat/image/Bats/grey_headed_flying_fox_skimming_water_original.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.geocities.com/radar_foxbat/&usg=__YdJxha03evrI1G_vVwwC_7hs-oM=&h=470&w=900&sz=67&hl=en&start=20&um=1&tbnid=OAFu7mco_47PSM:&tbnh=76&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbats%2Bin%2Bwater%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26um%3D1

(hilight with the mouse & copy'n'past in2 the URL if need be) from what I've seen birds walk if they fell they don't have to fly (like us if we fell we don't have to run) so i guess bat will walk sumtimes. Re: John Gjerdrum, sydneyoutsider@hotmail.com

What is the differences between bird wings and bat wings?

A bat wing consists of a membrane of skin stretched across extremely elongated fingers. A bird wing is an airfoil made of feathers attached to the forearm and fused bones in the "hand" and "wrist."

Bat and birds both have wings so why are they found on different branches of the tree of life?

Birds' wings feathers and bats' wings do not.

Bird wings are supported by a leading bone along the front while bat wings have bone supports across the wing.
heres a few things:

  • Bat wings are leathery to the touch, and not made out of feathers like bird's wings.
  • Bat wings are shaped differently, they are for cutting through the air quickly, whilst bird's wings are merely to keep in the air, and when birds want to dive quickly, they have to go up high and bring their wings to their body in a more or less freefall.

As well,

wing of a bat:

-has sheets of skip (patagium) between digits 2 through 5, all of which are elongated

- skin between body and hindlimb and tail (uropatagium)

wing of a bird:

- wing terminates in set of fused bones, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th digits

- greatest part of airfoil is made of flight feathers (light and produce wing slots to reduce drag)
