Calculators don't. Computers on the other hand can use various different software that follow mathematical command lines that signify to the software program what it has to do to the date following the command. Using these commands correctly you can build algorithms of numerical methods which then solve the continuous mathematical problem for you instead of having to do it by hand.
This is incredibly beneficial when you get into more complex algorithms in more complex continuous mathematics. For example solving fixed-point iterations are relatively simple for normal equations. However for systems of equations it gets rather more complex and it is much simpler to write an algorithm for a computer to solve the problem, rather than try to do all the calculations by hand.

It is because the angles in Excel are measured in radians, not degrees. Often the default setting for measuring angles - even on scientific calculators - is the elementary mathematical degrees rather than the more advanced mathematicians' radians.

So Excel gives ATAN(1) = 0.7854 radians which is 0.7854*180/pi = 45 degrees.

If you mean when dividing 6 BY 9, then depending upon the make and model it may, or may not, be possible. The more recent Casio calculators have an option in the setup which allow for either the fraction or the recurring decimal to be displayed:
When using LineIO, the default is to display in rounded decimal format and there is no option; however, if you have a [S↔D] button, that will rotate between fraction, recurring decimal and rounded decimal display format.
When using MathIO, you can set LineIO output (as above) or MathIO output which defaults to a fraction, but use of the [S↔D] button will rotate between recurring decimal, rounded decimal and fraction form.
Alternatively, the less recent Casio calculators can convert the rounded decimal to fraction format (and back again) by pressing the [a b/c] button.
