San Juan Capistrano is the site of a Catholic mission for which it is named, Mission San Juan Capistrano. When the Mission was founded in 1776, the region was populated by the Acjachemen band of Native Americans, called Juanenos by the Spanish. The mission was named after the Franciscan saint Giovanni da Capistrano (1386-1456).

They spent their gold mostly on supplies for mining and land, but the people who made all the money were the merchants!

People became obsessed with gold in the California Gold Rush because gold is a precious metal that can be used for many things. It symbolized an item of luxury,creativity,and money.

The gold rush changed CA because of the numbers of people coming into the territory. San Francisco and Sacramento grew in population and size. They were the main "jumping off" points into the gold region. With them came new cultures, foods, and in less than 2 years CA went from a territory to a state on Sept. 9, 1850. Men like Levi Strauss, a tailor, created a business by adding brass brads to the pants of miners. Today we call these pants "Levis". A great deal of money came into CA from the East to invest in companies and banks that were built to handle the business from the thousands of people that came into the state. As more money poured into the state people spread out moving into areas in the center of the state and began growing/shipping crops they grew. The railroads began to build tracks into these areas and new cities grew up at the rail stops. Today those some of the largest cities in central CA and they still produce most of the crops sent to international and national markets. We still see the effects today of the gold rush.

It was retained and used to honor the failed California Republic which was never recognized on the International scene.

Our politicians can't agree on a budget. We have needs in schools, health, children's health, immigration policy, and so much more. The farmers need water and there are some farm towns in Central Valley that have 50% unemployment because of the water problems. Our taxes have gone up to support the inaction of the CA Senate. Yet, they still get their pay and perks. Teachers have gotten pink slipped because the school budgets can't support the teaching staff or programs in funding. Next week there is an election to pass four new propositions to tax us more to pay for schools, police and firemen. Yet, within each are "poison" pills that will tax us more and pay for less. They are moving funds from one account to another. It doesn't solve our problems, just moves them. Does that give you an idea of what is going on here?

Because America at the time, felt it was their right and duty to expand across the continent to to Pacific. The US wanted California for its great port cities along the Pacific, cities such as San Francisco and San Diego. James K. Polk also wanted to gain California from Mexico because he did not want the British to claim it.

When the United States took the California territory from Mexico, California had no choice but to apply to become a state.

The reason people wanted California to become a state was to have the same representation in politics and to get the same benefits and rights protections that other states had. In a way they were forced. The United States didn't want the territory to go back to Mexico, so the only way it would be represented was if it applied to become a United States state.

Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill on the South Fork of the American River east of what is now Sacramento, California. However, the subsequent Gold Rush happened rather gradually at first, then built as word spread worldwide.
