They could be getting a Facebook account because that is simply the agreed best way to converse to each other during a group project. They could also be getting Facebook to keep in touch with their old friends who they don't see anymore.

Likely because he'/she is not on your mailing list. One way of adding friends is to invite them through face book on your external mailing list "find friends" option or if they are on face book already, for them to invite you. You then get an email with the fact that the friend has accepted your invitation, or you respond by accepting his/her invitation. Trust this answer helps.. I wouldn't say it is bad for you but I have face book and the people who you add sometimes don't use the best of language so it is very bad for kids under 13 and also if you join and your under the minimum age then it is teaching you to fake your age later on in your life.
