and Raeuchermaennchen are also common. Raeuchermaennchen are wooden figurines that are hollow and you can place a piece of incense inside. While the incense burns down, it looks like the figurine is puffing out smoke.

There are many different traditions, so keep in mind that this is by no means a complete list and that people may do things differently depending on where in Germany the live.

Germany is a large country and gets it water from a variety of sources. A large amount of water is taken from the Ruhr and Lippe rivers. Several places also rely on wells, especially those areas in southern Germany.

Assuming that you are an American, you must go to the Auslanderamt, (immigration office) and find out what you will need to qualify Just being married does not give you citizenship rights. After you have demonstrated that you fulfill the requirements, you will receive a document which you must then take to an American Consular Office with US Citizen Services. (They are in Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich) There you must renounce your American citizenship in front of the U.S. Consulate. (The person, not the building!) They will not allow you to do this unless you have the right to another state citizenship, hence the paper from the German immigration office.) After your US Citizen has been renounced, you may obtain your German passport. (But why bother? Being married to a German gives you permanent residence. Yes, you must apply for this again every so often, but if you fulfill the requirements for citizenship, you will also fulfill the requirements for a "Aufenthaltstitel", which will give you all the benefits you need and allows you to keep your US Citizenship)

Some "Gymnasium" (German for University preparatory schools, like Grammar schools, UK or grade schools, US), have lessons for a couple of hours on Saturday morning. The Germans often have special baking evenings for making spiced cakes, cookies and gingerbread houses. The German Christmas tree pastry, das Christbaumgebäck, is a white dough which is molded into shapes and baked to make tree decorations.

On Christmas Eve, there's an evening feast, generally of carp and potato salad (meat is avoided for religious reasons).

On Christmas Day the family tucks into suckling pig or roasted goose, white sausage, macaroni salad, and regional dishes, der Christstollen, long loaves of bread with nuts, raisins, lemon and dried fruit, der Lebkuchen, ginger spice cookies, das Marzipan and der Dresdner Stollen, a moist, heavy bread filled with fruit and marzipan.
Germans eat on Christmas foods like sausages, baked potatoes, ... and certainly get mulled claret.
