Ther are at least 2 reasons why a Betta will not kill a goldfish. 1 A male Betta will only attack and fight another male Betta. 2, They should never meet. Bettas are tropical fish and need to be kept at around 78F and Goldfish are coldwater fish and should be kept at below 70F. In order to be successfull keeping any fish, (coldwater or tropical) the basic rules apply. The rules are :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs to have a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. Keep to the above rules and your fish will stand a chance of survival. Fail in any and I can guarantee that your fish will have constant health problems and will live a shortened life span.

Goldfish are coldwater fish, not tropical fish, and they prefer to live in coldwater. Higher temperature water contains lower dissolved oxygen levels thus making it harder for the goldfish to breath.

There are certainly aquatic animals that can't swim, such as the clam, or the adult barnacle (and even then, the larval form of the barnacle does swim) but you wouldn't really call anything a fish if it couldn't swim. Fish swim.

Yes their fins will grow back. Add some aquarium salt and/or Melafix to the water to help prevent infection. Both can be found at your local walmart. Keep the water clean!

I had a fancy tail gold fish that had his caudal fin eaten almost completely off. It grew back to be just as if not more beautiful than before but it took many months.

If there is a male & female together in a tank, the male will chase the female poking his head against her side & belly to get her to release eggs. If she does, he will then release what is called milt in an attempt to fertilize the eggs.

Then the breeder will remove the eggs from the tank into a shallow container and care for the eggs until fry are born which are cared for until they are big enough for a regular tank.

You should really get a algae eater. Some of the alge killers are harmful to the fish.

it really depends on what type of algae. if its green water algae then use and algicide which you can purchase from aquariums. if it's filament algae then get some snail or algae eating fish. the quickest solution is to scrap the algae off yourself.

Goldfish are not particularly attracted to any one colour.

Fred Farrow of Hanmer Springs in New Zealand speared a giant eel in the Clarence River in 1926. This long finned eel weighed in at 98 1/2 pounds. I think they may get even larger as Fred swore he saw a bigger one near the same spot that swallowed a half grown sheep.

Use a filter and try not to give it too much food. Sometimes it won't eat all the food and the water will cloud up faster from the dissolved food. also it depends on the tank if its big one you could buy one of those suker fish to clean it for you they wont kill your fish and you never have to feed them

Swim bladders are a relatively recent adaptation. Other kinds of marine animals have found different solutions to the same problem. Elasmobranchs have an oily liver, plankton continually swim up or have spines/ floats to avoid sinking, mammals have their airfilled lungs.

I believe there are some meds available that "CLAIM" to treat swim bladder problems. From my experience, I have found those claims to be false and I know of no one who has found any reliable cure for swim bladder problems. Gentle raising and lowering of the water temp has also been reputed to work in some instances.

They will eat mosquito larvae and any bugs that linger on or near the surface.

i'v tryed puttting male betta's with other fish and never turn out well (death) and don't put them together but the females do fine with other fish and get along with each other

No. The only way to tell the difference between male and female goldfish visually is to observe them when they are in breeding season/condition. At this time the male fish develop white spots on their gill plates and pectoral fins. The females simply get more chubby as they fill up with ova (eggs)

No doing this will kill the good bacteria in the tank and end up killing all your fish guaranteed. Good bacteria grows on your gravel and in your filter that breaks down the harmful waste products of your fish into a harmless substance. This bacteria keeps your fish alive. You also never do full water changes because it also kills the bacteria.

It depends on the size of the bowl, and also whether there is more than one fish in it and what size they are- generally speaking, a water change should be about once a month for a single coldwater fish, though you might need to make it more often if there's more than one living in the bowl. There is no need to do a COMPLETE water change- changing about 2/3rds of the contents is ample, and avoids having to remove the fish whilst you do it, which can be stressful for it.

Guppies are surface fish so that's where they are most of the time.

Goldfish are best with goldfish with the exception of weather (dojo) loaches, bristlenose plecos, or apple/mystery snails.
You should not keep a fire belly newt with goldfish as their needs are very different. In addition, the newt needs a land area, so a smaller tank with partial water and a nice dry land area is best.

Goldfish are cold blooded creatures. The speed of their metabolism depends upon the temperature of the water they are in. They are essentially Carp and so they have evolved to perform and do best in temperate conditions. Their best temperature range is from around 50F up to 70F. At 70F their metabolism is going full pelt and this is the temperature they breed at. Any warmer than around 73F and they can suffer burn out and shortage of breath because their gills are not efficient enough to collect sufficient oxygen from the oxygen depeted warm water. Below 50F their internal organs begin to slow down as the fish too slows down. They eat less and do less until the water gets cold enough for them to stop doing anything . They can then survive just above freezing (32F) by going into a kind of trance 'hibernation'.

The best way is to do at least a partial water change - remove some old water & add fresh new.
In addition, you should check for too much debris or dead plants in the pond and remove them, and re-plant some fresh new plants.
If you have filtration for the pond, consider upgrading it, and lastly, if there are too many fish in the pond (which can happen), try to re-home some of them.
