Until last night I assumed slugs only ate plants but I was wrong. Each night as I lose my dogs out the back to do their business I always notice huge spiders on my white house walls. I dispatch the spiders as they crawl through the vented windows.
Upon letting the dog back in I witnessed a slug eating the dead spider that was stuck to the wall. I took photos of it to prove. All that remained were the legs.
So there you go. Slugs are omnivore's.

get a box or container, dig a hole as deep and did as your container, then place the box in it
this box has to be big enough to trap a bug and not let it escape
the idea is to put food in the box and the bug will go to the food and fall in and not be able to get out
also check trap daily

I've read, and I'm now trying Borax (can be found in the detergent isle of your local grocer. Usually in a Green & Yellow box with Red lettering (Mule Team Borax). It has many household uses, including a detergent boosting agent for laundry. However, it has a long history of getting rid of ants. I used it successfully for Carpenter Ants in Ohio ... I've just put it out to see if it will work on Fire Ants. I have a nasty infestation in my back yard and get bitten frequently. Their bites normally leave a small welt that will sting and itch for weeks.
You can mix the borax with moist cat food (you MUST cover this and only leave a hole small enough for the ants to get in... because Racoons and neighborhood cats will also be attracted to it. ) Best to only have it out during the times you are home and can watch it, also during the day and not at night since most ants will bed down for the night and that is the main time for Racoons, Cats etc to roam.
You can also sprinkle the borax in your yard and around the perimeter of your home, just remember to reapply after it rains.
