What flag is on top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa?
The Pisan Cross
The Pisan Cross is the symbol of Pisa. It was the coat of arms of the people of Pisa: the symbol of the cross was granted, in fact, to Pisans by Pope Benedict VIII to fight Saracens in Sardinia in 1017.
The final story is the bell chamber itself, which has 16 arches. There is a 297 step spiral staircase inside the tower leading to the top. The top of the leaning tower of Pisa is about 17 feet off the vertical.
Is the Leaning Tower of Pisa straight now?
Yes, some attempts were made to correct the tower's lean.
Benito Mussolini, Italy's prime minister from 1922-1943, ordered the Leaning Tower of Pisa to be returned to a vertical position, so concrete was poured into its foundation. The results were unexpected and sank the tower further into the soft soil.
The tower was in serious danger of toppling completely by 1964, so the Italian government asked for aid and advice to preserve it. It took many decades of consultation and preparatory efforts, but finally the tower was closed to the public in January 1990 for a period of about 11 years while corrective reconstruction and stabilisation work was done. The lean of the tower, which had become excessive, was corrected by removing 38 cubic metres of soil from underneath the raised end. It is expected that the tower will remain stable for another 300 years.
Much of the success of this enterprise can be attributed to British Professor John Burland, emeritus professor of soil engineering at Imperial College London. His analysis of the lean and how to fix it is detailed in the article at the related weblink below.
