How can no how to read?

English is a difficult language to learn.

Reading anything can help you to learn English words. For example, you can practice reading road signs, restaurant menus, bus schedules, etc.

Then, use a dictionary to look up words you don't understand.

Libraries have children's books for different grade levels. Don't be embarrassed to look at these children's books---they give the building blocks of how to read.

Make a "word book" - write words down. Make a list of words you already know. Then, make a list of words you do not understand when you see them.

Don't be afraid to ask someone, "What is this word?" Ask the person to explain the word's meaning.

Churches and many agencies in the USA teach reading classes. The classes are free.

Online also has English as second language courses.

If you are new to the USA, tell people you know or meet that you want to learn how to read.

If you have a little money, you can buy flash cards with a picture on one side, and the word on the other side.

You can also buy workbooks that teach you how to read and how to build a sentence.

Many USA-born citizens even need help to read. For one reason or another, many kids get behind in school and can't read well. But with practice, you can learn to read and learn correct spelling. Remember that reading is sight and sound - you see the word and sound out the word before you start to remember the meanings of each word.

If you visit the Online Writing Lab (OWL--see Related Link), that site has the rules of the English Language and examples of sentences.

Lastly, don't give up, no matter how hard it seems at first. Start one word at a time. Reading, sounding-out, speaking out loud, and writing the words will all help you to learn how to read.

Why were enslaved people forbidden from learning to read and write?

Enslaved people weren't allowed to read and write because if they did no how to do so, they would be able to defend themselves. For example, they could point out in some document that their masters weren't treating them right.
The fear of an uprising would occur if the slaves could communicate and plan. If they had the abillity to read and write that would only make them a larger threat because knowledge is power.
The reason it was a crime to teach slaves to read was because they would learn how to fight back against their owners. Having knowledge is the ultimate power.
It might have given the slaves a chance to feel a bit of power. Slaves' main purposes were, obviously, to be their owner's slave. There was no reason for them to know how to read and write.

Also, it might have given them a chance to send a letter to someone for help. My guess is the owners thought it could lead to something like the underground railroad.

Some slaves taught themselves how to read and write, but they themselves still received a whipping.

Hope I helped(:

Why is reading for college different from reading for pleasure?

You need to read for facts and details instead of fun and enjoyment. When I read textbooks in college I kept a running outline of what I read as I read. I wouldn't read for fun while classes were in session even if I was in the middle of a book. You need to think and learn the details/facts for each class.

Is it recommended that you read out loud or to yourself to get a clear understanding of what you are reading?

It does not matter whether you read aloud or read silently to yourself. What matters is whether you are relating to and understanding the text that you are reading. To read for understanding, you must have some prior knowledge (whether learned or experienced)about the topic you are reading. It is on this prior knowledge that you can build new understandings. If you understand what you are reading, you should then be able to apply your knowledge in some way. What you are reading (a book for enjoyment or a dry text book)and the type of reader/learner you are, determines how you actually read the text. If you are reading aloud to an audience, chances are good you won't retain or understand the text because your first focus will be on reading aloud to the audience and making a half-decent impression. How you read is a matter of personal choice-I use both silent reading as well as reading out loud to myself for understanding. Good Luck on your reading! I was told by a teacher that the best way to retain knowledge was to read it outloud to yourself. This would be for preparing for a test and not necessarily for just reading in general. She explained it to me this way.

If you just scan the text, you can get into a habit of jumping words, sentences or even lines of text. When youy read something aloud, three stimuli or senses are used. Sight, speech and hearing. If it doesnt sound right, you will go back and reread it again until it makes sense. In order to recall this information at a later time, you have it in three places in your memory (or you remembered it three ways). You have read it before. You have spoke it before. You have heard it before. Hope this helps!
