Depending on which time in history you want to look at, a resident was liable to die a gruesome death by his or her mid-30s from things like the Black Death (bubonic plague), dysentery, tuberculosis, or actually almost any other medical ailment, since medicine was primitive at best, and you could easily die from about anything other than a little sniffle.
Sanitation was almost non-existent. People threw their garbage and 'night soil' out on the street, which was already ankle-deep in horse manure in many areas. Smoke and fog from cooking fires clogged the air. It was not a very pleasant thing, but you'd never know it from your typical mass entertainment. I watched "A Christmas Carol" on TV and didn't see one single pile of horse crap.
Nutrition was hit and miss. You might get 'organic' food, but it was often spoiled and rotten. You ate it anyway. There was no refrigeration. There were no nice grocery stores with shelves and shelves full of food. There were no Twinkies.

He also was a good man the only problem he had was smoking so after 6 full years I told my mom to call him to water our plants so she called his wife answered and said that he is in the hospital and has gotten lung cancer because he smoked a lot. So I got pretty scared but luckily he survived and never smoked again. Even doctors say that Smoking is bad for you. Smoking is bad because it makes other people sick, it's bad because it makes your teeth yellow and it's bad because it gives you cancer. Did you know that about 5.4 million people die from smoking per year. Smoking can make other people sick because once I was going to the mall when I was 6. I had to pass a guy smoking so it went in my eyes I felt so bad and felt like caughing for 1 hour. Also before my granhdpa used too smoke but unfotunatly died.
Smoking distroys nature because once I saw on the news that the whole rainforest cought on fire because someone was smoking I really feel bad for all the animals who die and loose their homes. Another thing I hate about it is when I see cigarettes on the beach it really bugs me when I see some people just ruin the beach and I step on cigarettes on the my point is that there is no point of smoking.
